Older, wiser gobblers teach valuable lessons

A turkey hunt in Tennessee a few years ago proved one thing that I have long been a believer of – although not necessarily a fan of – that in order to be consistent at shooting wise old gobblers, more often than not, calling to them can sometimes ruin your hunt.
Now, this goes against everything I love in a traditional turkey hunt.

Bob Gwizdz: Pre-spawn bass fishing offers great fun and has not hurt the fishery in Michigan

Catch-and-keep bass season is still a ways off in Michigan, but the best fishing of the year may be right now.
“No doubt about it,” said Ben Nielsen, who hosted me on his bass boat on Hardy Dam Pond in mid-April. “Fish are coming out of their winter pattern, they’re hungry, their metabolism is speeding up, they’re going to be spawning soon, and they’re putting on the feedbag.”

Outdoor Insights: What’s Minnesota doing right when it comes to wild turkeys?

Minnesota blew the lid off its previous record spring wild turkey harvest last year, and the first half of 2025 has kept pace with 2024.

My daughter, my dad, and I must’ve hit the midseason doldrums last weekend, however. Between a half-dozen sits, we heard one gobbler, and he was unimpressed with my calling. My daughter’s tag is good the entire season, and adults like me with unfilled tags may hunt season F from May 21 to May 31, so we’ll get out again.

Penn State undergrad sees her research as key to moving on

Seeing the “huge juxtaposition” between streams flowing near her childhood home in Lancaster County, Pa., impaired by pollution from intensive agriculture and the seemingly pristine creeks tumbling down the forested mountains around her family’s cabin in Mifflin County led Bridget Reheard to study how contaminants in waters affect aquatic organisms and aspirations for a career working to protect natural resources.

Steve Pollick: H2Ohio in danger of being flushed down drain

For a week in early April, Ohio’s Sandusky River had hardly lived up to its designation as “state scenic,” boiling brown and angry and flooding bankside lowlands.
Four and a quarter inches of rain or more had turned a lovely winding stream into a raging torrent. Much the same could be said for the Sandusky’s big cousin, the Maumee River, about 35 miles to the west and the largest river and watershed by far on the entire Great Lakes.

New York lawmakers to focus on bills after budget delay

On April 28, nearly a month after the April 1 deadline, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced an agreement had been reached with the state’s legislative leaders on key priorities in the Fiscal Year 2026 New York State Budget, which was poised to tally $254 billion.
But at press time, negotiations with the state legislature were still occurring and the budget had yet to pass, making it nearly six weeks late, and the latest since 2010. However, there was anticipation that passage was close to being realized as several items in the anticipated $254 billion budget continued to be negotiated. Among Hochul’s budget proposals was $357 million to be directed toward gun violence in New York.
