In the predawn of Saturday June 25, 1927, the distant sound of a steam whistle announced the approach of a locomotive closing in on Wausau’s Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railroad (the Milwaukee Road) depot on Grant Street.
The arrival of a train at the busy station was not uncommon, but this one was coming through at an early hour and was not on the regular schedule. It had left Chicago the previous evening, “six coaches, all but one being sleepers,” bound for Star Lake in Vilas County, Wis.

Washington County Circuit Court Judge Sandra J. Giernoth sentenced Jessica Jill Kroening, 37, of West Bend, Wis., (formerly of Brownsville), to 30 days in the county jail and a $1,000 fine, plus court costs, for her involvement in a deer poaching case in southeast Wisconsin that involved the illegal shooting of an estimated 100 to 150 deer.
Washington County District Attorney Barry J. Braatz passionately argued for the maximum sentence, 12 months incarceration. Kroening’s attorney, David Nelson, asked for a fine and prohibition of Kroening obtaining a hunting license.

House Republicans added a provision to their sweeping tax cut package authorizing sales of hundreds of thousands of acres of public lands in Nevada and Utah, prompting outrage from Democrats and environmentalists who called it a betrayal that could lead to drilling, mining and logging in sensitive areas.
Republicans on the House Natural Resources Committee adopted the land sales proposal early Wednesday morning. The initial draft had not included it amid bipartisan opposition. The land sale provision was put forward by Republican Reps. Mark Amodei of Nevada and Celeste Maloy of Utah.
Gov. Tony Evers reappointed Bill Smith and newly appointed Jeff Hastings to six-year terms on the Wisconsin Natural Resources Board (NRB).
Smith’s term expired May 1. This will be his second six-year term. He is serving as NRB chair for the third consecutive year. Hastings is filling a vacancy as Marcy West’s term expired May 1. She chose not to be re-appointed to the board. Hastings, 69, has a long background in natural resources, including enjoying fishing and hunting.

We have always known that fish leave reservoirs by going over dams, which is a big reason why fishing below dams is so popular. Losing those fish from the reservoir, which biologists call ‘escapement,’ can be a drain on the population and a challenge for managing that fishery.
This is especially true when expensive stocked fish are leaving the lake instead of staying put and available to anglers.
