Harvest numbers are up, but more permits are at play in Illinois bobcat season

Bobcat trappers and hunters in Illinois appear to be ahead of the harvest pace compared to previous seasons.
But there are new numbers in the mix that must be considered. As of Jan. 8, a total of 255 bobcats had been tagged – the average taken at the same point over the past seven seasons is 159. Stan McTaggart, program manager for DNR’s Wildlife Diversity Program, pointed out that the number of bobcat permits issued doubled two years ago, and have quadrupled since the bobcat season was opened nine years ago.

New York’s Sullivan County sportsmen’s club adjusts after state’s ban on coyote hunting contests

Ever since New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signed S.4099/A.2917 in December 2023 – an amendment to the state’s environmental conservation law that “makes certain hunting contests, competitions, tournaments, and derbies that allow for the take of large numbers of wildlife” illegal –  many organizations that relied on those contests for fundraising knew they had to find alternatives.
Among those is the Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs of Sullivan County, which relied heavily on its annual coyote hunting contest to help fund federation programs.

Patrick Durkin: One of three Wisconsin bear cubs survive after sow loses cornfield den

Heavy rains and sodden fields in autumn often block farmers from harvesting cornfields before winter.
When that happens north of Hwy. 10, it’s no surprise weeks later when a combine cutting crops from the frozen fields kills or cripples denned-up black bears.
Contrary to assumption, not all bears burrow beneath stumps or underground to snore through winter. Bears can den in a culvert between fields or beneath roads, or the thick upper branches of fallen trees. Still other bears curl into subtle nest-den depressions they scrape into the interior of standing cornfields.

ASMFC looking ahead following December striped bass meeting

As coverage in the Jan. 10 edition of New York Outdoor News reported, The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s Atlantic Striped Bass Management Board met on Dec. 16 to decide whether to reduce 2025 striped bass landings and provide additional protection for the 2018 striped bass year class, the last strong year class produced by the striped bass stock.
After more than three hours of discussions, it decided to leave 2025 management measures unchanged, and to instead initiate a new addendum to the ASMFC’s striped bass management plan, which might include new restrictions for the 2026 season.

Tracking dog helps Wisconsin hunter find two fatally shot deer

Shooting and wounding a deer may well stand as the worst nightmare for any deer hunter.
Once is bad enough, but that happened twice to Mark Martin, of Rio, Wis., this past fall, when excitement turned to disappointment, but then returned to excitement thanks to some outside help.
