Hudson River researchers in New York boat rare Atlantic sturgeon

In June, biologists and volunteers working for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s Hudson River Estuary Program caught a female Atlantic sturgeon, estimated to weigh about 220 pounds, in the Hudson River near the Town of Hyde Park.
Fish of that size are not unusual, and the DEC has captured even larger sturgeon this year. However, the fact that the fish was a mature female made it a notable catch that grabbed national headlines.

Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary designated

On June 6, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries released the final regulations needed to create a new Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary, which will encompass all of the United States’ portion of Lake Ontario east of the border separating Wayne and Monroe counties.
Once the new sanctuary is formally designated later this year, it will become the nation’s sixteenth national marine sanctuary, and the third such sanctuary established within the Great Lakes.

New York’s 2024 saltwater fishing outlook

Boats still rest on the shore in their shrink-wrapped cocoons. The tackle shops are quiet, and the gas docks are closed. Nevertheless, along New York’s coast, the fishing season will soon begin.
Each year is different, as fish stocks wax and wane, and new regulations go into effect. What can New York’s saltwater anglers expect in 2024?

Lawsuit terminology for the average gun owner

In recent years, state legislatures have passed laws, like New York’s Concealed Carry Improvement Act, that place increasing restrictions on the purchase, possession, and use of firearms. Many such restrictions appear to violate the Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, which guarantees that individual citizens’ “right to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”
Both individuals and organizations have brought lawsuits challenging such laws, but when hunters and shooters try to follow those cases as they move through the courts, they often confront technical and sometimes confusing language that leaves them unsure of what is going on.

New York’s public hearings on striped bass regulations yield varying opinions

In December, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation hosted two public hearings on the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s Draft Addendum II to Amendment 7 to the Interstate Fishery Management Plan for Atlantic Striped Bass.
If adopted by the ASMFC, Addendum II will help fisheries managers rebuild the overfished striped bass stock by 2029, the deadline established in the striped bass management plan. The addendum focuses on reducing striped bass fishing mortality in 2024.

Public land hunters need to be aware of DEC’s permit process as Long Island deer hunt starts Jan. 7

Sunday, Jan. 7, will mark the opening day of Long Island’s firearms deer season, a season which since the mid-1960s has allowed not only Long Island hunters, but also a surprising number of hunters from upstate and even from outside New York, one last chance to get outdoors in pursuit of their favorite big game animal.
As Brian O’Keefe, a North Merrick native who usually hunts in Orange and Sullivan counties, observed, “I appreciate not having to cross a bridge and drive for hours to hunt deer.”

Long Island angler smashes New York thresher shark record with 707-pounder

On June 16, angler William Dittenhoefer, of Baldwin, N.Y., in Nassau County, was fishing from Capt. Michael Spagnuolo’s Freeport-based charter boat Gina Ann, when he fought and landed a 707-pound common thresher shark, which broke the New York State record for that species by nearly 100 pounds.
DEC officially accepted the new record on Aug. 11. A record thresher was certainly not the first thought in Dittenhoefer’s mind as the Gina Ann, a 38-foot down-easter built by Glenn Holland, of Maine, sailed out of Jones Inlet. The boat was participating in the Hooks for Heroes Shark Tournament, a charity event headquartered at Scotty’s Marina in Point Lookout.

Marine Fisheries Commission debates new striper rules

On Aug. 1, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s Atlantic Striped Bass Management Board debated new management measures intended to help rebuild the over-fished striped bass population.
Last November, scientists informed the Management Board that the population would probably rebuild by 2029, the deadline established in the striped bass management plan. But in May of this year, the board learned that 2022 recreational landings were so high that rebuilding was no longer likely.
