New York, coastal states ease black sea bass regulations

New York’s saltwater anglers should enjoy a big increase in black sea bass landings this year, thanks to a series of actions taken by the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council and the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s Summer Flounder, Scup, and Black Sea Bass Management Board.

Long Island shark fishing: Some anglers now catch sharks for science, not just for sport

Sportfishing for sharks got its start off the coast of New York about 75 years ago, after Montauk charter boat captain Frank Mundus realized that his customers were having more fun catching the sharks that they hooked accidentally than they had fighting the fish that they were actually trying to catch.
That was an important revelation, for in those days, offshore fishermen held sharks in low regard.

Long Island waterfowl stricken by bird flu

A headline in the Feb. 6 issue of New York Outdoor News issue warned, “Bird flu cases could increase in Northeast.” That has been the case on Long Island, where residents are regularly finding dead waterfowl in large enough numbers to catch the attention of local news outlets.
Bird flu or, more properly, Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, has been a threat to Long Island waterfowl since February 2022, when New York’s first case was detected in Suffolk County.

On Jan. 28, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit found that the “Andros Order,” a 1676 agreement between Edmund Andros, then the Royal Governor of New York, and the Unkechaug Indian Nation, did not entitle the Unkechaug to harvest the immature American eels known as “glass eels,” which are protected by state Department of Environmental Conservation regulations.

ASMFC looking ahead following December striped bass meeting

As coverage in the Jan. 10 edition of New York Outdoor News reported, The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s Atlantic Striped Bass Management Board met on Dec. 16 to decide whether to reduce 2025 striped bass landings and provide additional protection for the 2018 striped bass year class, the last strong year class produced by the striped bass stock.
After more than three hours of discussions, it decided to leave 2025 management measures unchanged, and to instead initiate a new addendum to the ASMFC’s striped bass management plan, which might include new restrictions for the 2026 season.
