New York’s Sullivan County sportsmen’s club adjusts after state’s ban on coyote hunting contests

For years, a coyote hunting contest and coinciding banquet was one of the primary fundraisers for the Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs of Sullivan County. Legislation banning such contests has forced the group to make some changes in how to raise funds to support a number of programs. (Stock photo)

Ever since New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signed S.4099/A.2917 in December 2023 – an amendment to the state’s environmental conservation law that “makes certain hunting contests, competitions, tournaments, and derbies that allow for the take of large numbers of wildlife” illegal –  many organizations that relied on those contests for fundraising knew they had to find alternatives.
Among those is the Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs of Sullivan County, which relied heavily on its annual coyote hunting contest to help fund federation programs.
