Controlled archery hunt ‘best course of action’ to manage Lake Springfield’s deer in central Illinois

The Illinois DNR and Springfield’s City Water, Light and Power are again allowing specially-permitted bowhunters to harvest deer on specific properties around Lake Springfield this fall.
The goal is to lower an overpopulation of the deer herd in the area, and DNR’s Illinois Recreational Access Program (IRAP) will help administer hunting between October and December. DNR is hopeful hunters who are awarded permits will be able to harvest at least three deer in a two-week time period.

Decatur ‘Early Birds’ hook youngsters on fishing’s joy in Illinois

The statewide effort in Illinois to get more young people fishing is a task Herb Dreier initially tackled many years ago.
So it’s no surprise the former program manager for DNR’s Urban Fishing Program is quick with a reply when asked about the key to recruiting new anglers.
“It’s important they catch a fish – any fish, it can be a tiny fish, but catching a fish is vital,” said Dreier, who retired from DNR in 2012 but eventually found himself doing what he did in his working days.

Bear(s) make regular pit stops in Illinois

Residents in different parts of Illinois have found a unifying pastime each summer: spotting black bears.
This time it was southern Illinois.
Bear things apparently include squeezing in some tee time. In late July, Kokopelli Golf Club in Marion issued a warning to golfers and the public after a black bear was spotted in Williamson County heading toward the course.

Invasive spiny water fleas ‘worst they have been’ on New York’s Lake George this year

Joe Greco has been fishing on New York’s Lake George for more than four decades, hitting the lake daily in the summer with his charter fishing business.
Paying attention to trends on the lake is a big part of his business, so when he says an invasive pest on the lake has never been as prevalent as it is now, he speaks from knowledge. Whenever Greco and his crew at Justy Jo Charters are using lighter tackle, they find a small pest known as spiny water fleas clustered to their lines this summer.

RFK Jr. behind 2014 New York City dead bear discovery; did he break New York roadkill rules?

Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. admitted last weekend that in 2014 he had retrieved a bear cub that was killed by a motorist and then left it in New York’s Central Park with a bicycle on top, sparking a mystery that consumed the city.
Various news outlets, including the Associated Press, reported that Kennedy described the incident in a video that was posted to social media Aug. 4, adding it will be included in a forthcoming New Yorker article that he expects to be damaging. What too may be damaging is that Kennedy acted unlawfully by transporting the animal without the proper authorization, as well as for dumping it in New York City.
