King salmon cooperate at New York’s Sodus Pro-Am on Lake Ontario

Lake Ontario cooperated during the 2024 Sodus Pro Am, held July 13-14 in Sodus Point, N.Y., in Wayne County.
In past years, the normal conditions out in the “Big O” would give the teams one good day, and then one blow-off day. The lake was flat both days. This year’s Pro-Am had 27 pro and 36 amateur teams trolling the waters, searching for the king salmon and prize money.

Future sporting access a concern at New York’s popular Kaaterskill Clove

The public will get a look this fall at a draft proposal that will guide future best use practices at one of the most popular destinations in the Catskill Park.
And while a final Visitor Use Management for Kaaterskill Clove is expected to be completed over the winter, area sportsman’s groups remain concerned the plan will overlook the needs and wishes of the hunting community. Kaaterskill Clove is a deep gorge in the eastern Catskill Mountains, just west of the village of Palenville, in Greene County.

New York picks up after widespread mid-July storms

Mid-July was a treacherous time in New York, as a series of tornado-spawning storms, which also caused flooding, ripped through the state.
It started with the remnants of Hurricane Beryl on July 10 and in the weeks that followed included additional tornadoes touching down in Rome, in Oneida County, and near Warrensburg, in Warren County, later in the month. The remnants of Beryl were felt in much of the state.

Commentary: Remembering New York’s Bill Conners, a tireless conservationist

Dan Ladd did a fine job reporting about the accomplishments of the late Bill Conners in the July 12 edition of the New York Outdoor News. Not only was Bill an accomplished outdoor writer, he was a conservationist and was associated with several conservation organizations.
His longest association was with the Dutchess County Federation, and as the article pointed out he was also active with the Conservation Fund Advisory Board, Fish and Wildlife Management Board, and Deer Search. I would like to offer a reflection on Bill’s work with the New York State Conservation Council.

Wisconsin State Roundup: Time for DNR to fix the mess of discontinued co-op trout rearing program

If the Wisconsin DNR’s office of communism (communications) wanted to do something useful instead of blocking reporters’ access to DNR personnel and censuring responses of field staff to forced written questions from reporters, department personnel could instead try to help their agency wiggle out of this mess that has become the recently discontinued co-op trout rearing program.
