Early open-water walleye action on rivers about to heat up

Typically, following a long, cold, and snowy winter, many anglers yearn for a chance to fish open water. Unfortunately, for those who love the ice, it was one of the mildest winters I can remember. Whether you’re ready or not, spring is on its way. This time of year offers a sense of newness and rejuvenation that inspires many of us anglers.
Across the north country, the month of March means one thing: walleyes. Specifically, river walleyes.

Minnesota DNR says no cormorant control necessary for Pelican Lake

Citing back-to-back successful walleye year-class production, the Minnesota DNR has decided – at least for the time being – against cormorant population control on Pelican Lake in Grant County in western Minnesota.
Last week’s decision by the agency, which included an announcement that the DNR will develop an adaptive monitoring and management plan for Pelican Lake, follows new information showing walleye numbers on the popular fishing lake improved in 2022 and 2023.

Interested in traveling for a turkey hunt? Here’s what to know

We’re just a shade over a month away from the turkey opener in Minnesota. When it begins, thousands of hunters will take to the spring woods in search of a cooperative gobbler.
Many of those hunters will tag toms, and in a one-bird state such as Minnesota, that means it’s a wrap on the season.
The opportunity to take others hunting exists, of course. But there’s another option: travel.

Dan Ladd: One hunter’s take on crossbows and compounds

I’m not sure the crossbow debate in New York is ever going to go away.
Even if the state legislature were to eventually pass legislation allowing crossbows during the entire archery season – which is the desire of crossbow enthusiasts and the biggest concern for those vehemently opposed to them – I’ll bet the debate would continue. It’s sad that the hunting community is so divided at a time when unity is needed more than ever.

Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission plans $93 project to improve state fish hatcheries

New wild trout streams and Class A Wild Trout Waters seem to be identified and approved at almost every quarterly meeting of the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission. This causes some anglers to wonder if the agency is abandoning or at least de-emphasizing stocked trout.
According to Tim Schaeffer, agency executive director, that is just not the case. He addressed a group of cooperative trout nursery operators at a Feb. 24 meeting in Moshannon.
“Stocked trout are still very important to the commission,” Schaeffer said. “In fact, we have just started on a $93 million hatchery capital improvement project, with completion likely in 2028.”

Jeremiah Haas: Catering to youth hunters can help them build confidence

Youth turkey season begins March 30 in Illinois – Easter weekend.
While this is likely to complicate things with church and travel plans, getting an eventful, encouraging hunt put together for your young one is always more work than hunting for yourself. However, the rewards of such hunts are significantly more meaningful than our own hunts, too.

Ryan Rothstein: For whitetails, what a difference a year makes in northern states

It almost defies comprehension to think of the differences between winter 2022-23 and winter 2023-24. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde would gasp if they saw the numbers.
In my locale of Minnesota, February 2024 came out to 14.8 degrees above average for the month. The overall meteorological winter (Dec. 1 through Feb. 29) shattered the old record for warmest winter by 3.9 degrees.
