Increasing number of unusual birds spotted in Pennsylvania lately

Earlier this month I traveled to Cumberland County, Pa., hopefully to see and photograph an unusual bird – a limpkin. If you have never heard of a limpkin, you aren’t alone. Limpkins are native to Florida, Central and South America.
With the help of a local photographer and Facebook friend, I was able to locate the limpkin feeding along Conodoquinet Creek in suburban Mechanicsburg.

Kayakers flocking to what is normally a dry desert region in California’s Death Valley National Park

Who would think there would be boating in California’s Death Valley National Park?
The park is the largest national park in the continental U.S. and encompasses a spot called Badwater Basin, a lonely outpost which is 282 feet below sea level – one of the lowest places in the world. It is also one of the driest places in North America. Badwater’s annual two inches of rainfall generally evaporates before it hits the ground.

Nature Smart: A day photographing wolves and bison as nature runs its course in Yellowstone

Along the Firehole River in Yellowstone recently, a group of photographers watched the Wapiti pack of wolves stalk a large, weak, and injured bull bison. Based on the bull’s size, this big boy was near the end of its life, and winter was taking its toll. For a full day, the wolves tried to approach the bison, but when he turned to defend himself, the wolves retreated.

Tips to manage your land for wild turkeys

The past few years have seen some peaks and valleys in turkey numbers across the Great Lakes states. Could management practices employed by small property owners give turkeys a boost? This scribe reached out to the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) to find out.
Clayton Lenk, NWTF district biologist for Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin offered to help, and together we devised a short list of management practices you can use to benefit turkeys.

Wisconsin ready to honor Aldo Leopold on 75th anniversary of Sand County Almanac

Several anniversaries come to mind as we approach Leopold Week, the annual celebration of legendary conservationist Aldo Leopold and his classic book, A Sand County Almanac.
This year marks the 75th anniversary of the book’s first printing in 1949. It has since been translated into 15 languages and sold well over 2 million copies. This year marks the 25th celebration of the original Leopold Weekend, when the professor’s fans in Lodi, Wis.  – population 2,893 at the time – gathered in the town’s library in March 2000 to read aloud A Sand County Almanac cover to cover.
