Iowa’s Spirit Lake Protective Association receives major conservation award from Pheasants Forever

The Spirit Lake Protective Association (SLPA) received a major award at Pheasants Forever’s Minnesota State Chapter Leadership Convention held in Willmar, Minn., Jan. 19-20.
The award, which is the Minnesota Pheasants Forever (PF) “Partnership of the Year Award” for 2023, was presented to the SPLA for its efforts in working with conservationists and clean water groups in both Minnesota and Iowa, along with national conservation organizations, to secure a 195.5-acre parcel of farmland just north of Shore Acres on the north shore of Big Spirit Lake.

Dam repairs, drawdown slated this year at Pennsylvania’s Kahle Lake

The Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission is moving ahead with dam repair plans at Kahle Lake in Venango and Clarion counties, with a drawdown and fish salvage operation possible later this year.
At its February meeting, the agency’s board was expected to extend the lifting of seasons, sizes and bag limits implemented by executive order last year to prepare for structural work that could start in 2025-26.

Streams of Thought: Where are we at with a plan for Minnesota’s Wildlife Management Areas?

While the Minnesota DNR’s timber management – mismanagement, depending upon whom you ask – on some of the state’s major wildlife management area units has been well-documented here and elsewhere in recent months (years, actually), we’ve waited patiently for the department to offer us the latest in planning for the 1,500 “other” WMA units across the state.
What did we gain from the recent DNR Roundtable? For me, a sense of deja vu: Didn’t we have this discussion about a year ago?

Ben Moyer: The use of drones for game recovery just doesn’t fly

Early last month, state Sen. Jarrett Coleman, Bucks, Lehigh counties, circulated a memorandum seeking support for his soon-to-be-introduced legislation that would make use of aerial devices (drones) legal in Pennsylvania in game recovery.
Proponents of drone use in game recovery might argue that recovery, in a strict sense of the word, is not hunting, and point to Ohio’s permission to use drones in this way as justification for Sen. Coleman’s bid.

Civilian Marksmanship Program lines up love on the gun range at Ohio’s Camp Perry

You might say that Tom and Joan Kerbel met by “accident” – that is, a car accident.
One fateful day, Tom got into a wreck so bad that it, unfortunately, destroyed his lunch – so, he was forced to walk into the local Subway to have another sandwich made. There, the employee, Joan, was happy to make him another sandwich. The two ultimately hit it off, marking the beginning of a lasting relationship. Fast forward eight years into their marriage and the two have sparked a new type of love affair that has strengthened their bond even more – air gun competition at Camp Perry.
