Nature Smart: Nature’s spectacular Northern lights

On my recent trip to the sub-Arctic to photograph/film polar bears and beluga whales, we snapped some images of one of nature’s most spectacular and inspiring shows: the aurora borealis or Northern lights.
Each day after an adventure of traveling across the tundra in search of polar bears, we would head back at sunset to grab some food, then get a 90-minute break before heading out in the dark to shoot photos of the Northern lights.

Backyard and Beyond: Autumn scenes

A great horned owl landed in a tree near Deb Ranney, allowing her to take this excellent photo of a raptor and its prey, in this case an unlucky muskrat. It “seemed strange to see the owl out hunting around noon on a summer’s day,” she wrote. But maybe the owl’s behavior isn’t so hard to understand, if it had several fledglings somewhere nearby, noisily demanding a meal.

Take control of buck fever

As most hunters know when a deer appears, especially if it’s a big deer, there is an adrenalin rush that can make us do stupid things especially if we don’t have a highly practiced shooting routine. Call it what you will – buck fever or target panic – it happens to all of us only at different degrees.
Buck fever is the nervousness we all feel when faced with making an important shot. We get butterflies in our stomach, our hands might shake, our mouth becomes dry and it’s hard to keep the bow or gun steady. If you think it can’t happen to you then think again.

New York DEC seeking help from Great Lakes waterfowl hunters

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is asking for help from both New York and Pennsylvania duck hunters in an effort to update waterfowl consumption advisories.
Those who hunt ducks in the Saint Lawrence River, Lake Ontario and embayments, Niagara River, and Lake Erie, or within 25 miles of these waterbodies, are being asked to consider donating part of their 2023-2024 bag toward this effort.

Long Island man indicted in case involving illegal butterfly selling

Birdwing butterflies are among the rarest and largest to grace the planet, their 10-inch (25.4-centimeter) wingspans flapping through the rainforests of Southeast Asia and Australia. Their sheer size can make them hard to miss.
But the U.S. attorney’s office in Brooklyn says Charles Limmer made tens of thousands of dollars over the past year by illegally trafficking flying insects, including endangered birdwings – whose numbers have fallen because of diminishing habitat and illegal poaching.

New York students gain real-world experience with environmental science on Oneida Lake

Two New York undergraduate students have completed summer internships with New York Sea Grant, performing field work through the Cornell Biological Field Station on Oneida Lake.
Micah Ford, of Arkport, and Krystal Dixon, of New Hampton, gained real-world experience with environmental science at the field station. New York Sea Grant is a cooperative program of Cornell University and the State University of New York. NYSG has been bringing science to the shores of New York state since 1971 and is one of 34 university-based programs under the NOAA National Sea Grant College Program.
