New York State Outdoor Writers Association holds fall safari in southeastern Adirondacks

After holding a spring conference in Corning in May, the New York State Outdoor Writers Association returned to Washington County this year for a fall safari. Over a dozen outdoor scribes, including several affiliated with New York Outdoor News, gathered for the three-day event held Sept. 29 – Oct. 2 in Fort Ann in Washington County.
The “Hogtown” area of Fort Ann is extremely popular with hunters and hikers and thousands of acres of the Lake George Wild Forest lies nearby the safari accommodations, which were a private residence on the 30-acre Thurber Pond. NYODN editor Dan Ladd hosted the event, as Fort Ann is his hometown.

KR Buck takes lifelong interest in the outdoors to Iowa Natural Resources Commission

KR Buck recalls an early choice he made between athletics and the outdoors.
His freshman basketball coach in Council Bluffs, Iowa, announced that the upcoming Saturday would require a practice to decide A-, B- and C-level squads. Those who did not attend would be excluded from the coveted top team.
“I can’t be at practice,” he told the coach. “It’s opening day of deer season.” However, the coach wouldn’t budge. Finally, Buck replied, “I’m only going to play basketball a few years. I’m going to hunt a lifetime.”

Ammunition background checks in New York are not working

What do retired law enforcement officers, former judges, active Environmental Conservation Officers, border patrol agents and even the Sheriff of Chautauqua County all have in common? Well, since the Sept. 13 launch of New York’s new background check system for buyers of both firearms and ammunition, all of the above have been initially denied an ammo purchase. The actual term is “delayed.”
And for what reason? That’s a question that nobody, especially in Albany, can even begin to answer.

After an accident paralyzed one arm, Minnesota high-schooler doesn’t let incident stop his shooting passions

Zach Day loved dirt bike riding as a kid and eventually saved enough money to buy his own bike in high school.
On Aug. 1, 2021, Day went off-roading and looked backward for a moment to check on his group. When he turned back around, he collided with a tree and his world flipped upside down.
He broke 10 bones, including his collarbone, and four nerves were damaged on his spine, paralyzing his left arm. Day had to adapt from using two arms to one arm in his daily life. A hardcore trap shooter, Day had to learn how to use one arm to hold and shoot a gun.
