Hunters a big part of North Dakota’s fight against CWD

Working for the North Dakota Game and Fish Department as a game warden and now biologist has provided countless positive interactions with hunters, anglers, trappers and citizens who love everything about North Dakota outdoors and are willing to do what they can to help the future of our outdoor heritage.
The relationships with fish, wildlife and conservation clubs and members are legendary from helping maintain and fund fishing access to submitting wings for upland game data. The cooperation is generational, appreciated and invaluable. We need it to continue and so do future generations of hunters and anglers.

Bulls are a bonus during long weekend in Pennsylvania elk country

As the sun dipped behind the mountains under a clear September sky, elk bugles echoed across Winslow hill. A large herd bull, antlers freshly shed of velvet, was busy corralling his harem away from younger suitors as dozens of onlookers gazed in wonder at the scene unfolding before their eyes.
This very display occurred just as I imagined it would during our first night in Pennsylvania elk country. Though I’ve witnessed it several times before, the majestic sight of a massive bull in all its glory feverishly working a group of cows is such an impressive sight, it keeps me coming back for more.

Will hunters, shooters support New York’s new background checksystem?

The readers of this publication said it all, at least those who took the time to visit our website and take our by-weekly online poll. In the Aug. 25 issue we asked the question: Have you been buying ammunition out of state to avoid having your personal information collected by the state police? When we went to press with the Sept. 8 issue the responses were a whopping 93% “yes” and just 7% “no,” eventually tapering to 87/13 respectively just before the next poll was posted.
If these numbers reflect the intentions of New York’s hunting and shooting crowd, then the state’s new firearms and ammunition background check system may have a tough time generating the revenue its creators envision.

Minnesota’s St. Louis River gets a stock of sturgeon fry in efforts to boost population

The Minnesota DNR has completed its first stocking of lake sturgeon in the St. Louis River since 2000. The stocking came after seeing restored habitat and spawning in the river and a desire to increase the population.
The DNR stocked 375 6-inch tagged lake sturgeon fry into the estuary at Duluth’s Chambers Grove Park on Sept. 12. Another 375 sturgeon are being sent to the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa with the goal of stocking in the upper St. Louis River. Lake sturgeon stocking took place periodically from 1983 to 2000 with 13 different year-classes being planted.
