Woodcock hunt – a good one for beginners – set to begin in Minnesota on Sept. 23

Various hunting seasons have begun during the past few weekends, and the woodcock season will get under way Saturday.
According to the Minnesota DNR, the woodcock population has decreased steadily over the past two or three decades, but there’s plenty of forest habitat across the state to ensure a successful timberdoodle hunt. The DNR recently hosted a webinar on the topic of woodcock hunting, and Lindsey Shartell, the department’s northeast regional wildlife manager, led the conversation.

Mixing work and play in New York’s North Country

When I came on board here at New York Outdoor News in March of 2020, I envisioned that part of the job would entail a little time on the road. It might be chasing stories or spending some time in the booth at the occasional sports show.
It hasn’t been as frequent as imagined. The first thing that happened, just weeks after I began, was COVID. This year has been the busiest since. During the winter and spring months I set up a subscription table at a couple of sportsmen’s shows and also dropped by shows in Oneida and Johnstown to help man the bigger booth there with our sales folks. But, taking work on the road is yet another approach I’ve intended to explore.

Wisconsin Whitetails Unlimited chapter loses longtime friend with Gary Magnus passing

Northwest Wisconsin’s hunting community, and especially Whitetails Unlimited, lost a friend and supporter with the passing of Gary Magnus, 72, of Spooner.
Magnus lived and breathed hunting of all types. He got a Whitetails Unlimited chapter going, and going strong, in Washburn County more than 30 years ago when he helped form the Northwest Wisconsin WTU Chapter. Magnus’s signature, old, faded yellow WTU hat was even on display at his funeral visitation.

Bowhunting well-represented by pioneers like Jim Dougherty

Many folks don’t know that until 50 years ago, Wisconsin’s cars and trucks killed more deer by accident than bowhunters did on purpose.
In fact, some of us can remember when our whitetails were few in number, bows were one-string novelties, and cedar arrows far outnumbered aluminum. We even thought fiberglass hunting shafts were revolutionary luxuries in 1973, and had no idea that carbon/graphite arrows would start their ride to dominance in another 15 to 20 years. Meanwhile, bow-killed deer were considered feats of luck or incredible skill, and bowhunters were forever trying to earn respect for their craft and its equipment.

Southern Illinois University research investigates presence of destructive nutria in state

No nutria is good news – at least in southern Illinois. A large South American rodent, the nutria was introduced to the United States in the 1940s to augment the trapping industry.
Derek Whipkey, a graduate student in zoology at Southern Illinois University, recently conducted a study through SIU’s Cooperative Wildlife Research Laboratory that found no evidence of nutria in southern Illinois at this time. However, nutria have been found as close as Ballard County, Kentucky.
