Lake Superior’s impressive hatch of ciscoes is already showing in its salmon catch

Every action has a reaction. As reported previously in Outdoor News, the 2022 cisco year-class in Lake Superior was one for the ages. Biologists are now saying it may double the previous record set in 1984. And the lake’s predators are feasting on these fatty, oily baitfish, which now measure about 6 inches long.
“That year-class of cisco – the 2022 year-class – that’s what all these salmon are chowing down on and that’s why we’re seeing Lake Michigan-esque salmon,” said Cory Goldsworthy, Lake Superior DNR fisheries supervisor in Duluth, Minn.
Salmon – both kings and cohos – have grown larger than normal in Lake Superior this season. And the cold water has kept them around the Duluth area where they’re within reach of many charter-boat anglers.

Wisconsin’s 2023 inland hook and line sturgeon season opens Sept. 2 on select waters

Continued science-based management practices and habitat work have kept lake sturgeon populations strong across Wisconsin, making it possible for anglers to participate in another inland hook and line season. The 2023 season will only be open on certain waters and will run from Sept. 2 through Sept. 30.

Bobcat permits up for grabs in Illinois through September

Permits for the eighth modern bobcat season in Illinois are up for grabs until the end of the month, with more than 6,000 trappers and hunters competing for 1,000 opportunities.
“Competing” may not be the accurate description – a DNR lottery actually decides who gets a permit. The number of applicants has remained high since the inception of the season in 2016, proving there are large numbers of bowhunters, trappers and gun hunters interested in hunting or trapping the apex predator.

Wisconsin’s Blackhawk Park hosts first Cops & Bobbers event to introduce kids to fishing

A sunny but breezy August morning greeted visitors to Vernon County’s Blackhawk Park on the Mississippi River where uniformed law enforcement officers and a group of children enjoyed some fishing and fun.
“This is the first Vernon County Cops & Bobbers,” said organizer Shawna McDowell. “But it won’t be the last.”
McDowell, a DNR game warden and part-time deputy sheriff, was one of several dozen officers, biologists, first responders, and others who volunteered to teach county kids about fishing, fish biology, and fish management.
