Here are the baits that will catch you bass through the entire open-water season

As America’s favorite game-fish species, bass – both largemouth and smallmouth – receive their fair share of attention. With so much interest, there’s no question as to why there are so many lure options on the market. An online search will yield thousands of those options.
There’s a handful of lures that perform extremely well no matter the time of year. They’re players at ice-out and they continue to be a threat until ice-up. I refer to these as the “broad baits” for bass.

Ohio steps up in fight against invasive carp with fish threatening entry into the Great Lakes

At the July meeting of the rulemaking Ohio Wildlife Council, John Navarro, the Ohio Division of Wildlife’s Aquatic Stewardship Program administrator, explained some of the methods and locations the agency is using to try to prevent what were formerly known as Asian carp from gaining access to the Great Lakes.

Here’s how to self-film your fishing trips

Even if you don’t dream of being a social media influencer, you should consider filming fishing outings. Not only is it a fun way to relive the excitement of catching a big fish, but the camera is an impartial observer that can help you become a better angler. Cast a critical eye at the footage a camera produces and you will not only see what you did right but – more importantly – what you may have done wrong.

Michigan DNR expands hours of operation at some sites to allow for nighttime use

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is changing the hours of operation at three sites to accommodate citizens’ use of the areas outside of the usual operating hours.
Many DNR launch ramps and parking areas are closed from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m., but increased interest in after-dark recreation – fishing and rock collecting – has caused the DNR to allow additional usage at the sites.

A different kind of date night that will pay off this hunting season

It doesn’t fall into your typical definition, if you have one, of “date night.” But it has worked for Paula and I, and after three dozen years of marriage chances are pretty good it’s not likely to change.
This summer, our atypical date nights will consist of regular Wednesday night trips to the local sportsmen’s club and its trap range. There is very little chit-chat, unless you count “pull!” as date night conversation.
