James Lindner: Understand the weed factor for icing crappies

Throughout the winter, crappies are among the most popular targets of ice anglers. Most experienced hard-water fishermen are no stranger to the all-too-familiar basin crappie bite. It’s a relatively simple pattern: Crappies dump into soft-bottom basin areas to feed on concentrations of blood worms and zooplankton. And the anglers follow.
While such bites are rather predictable, the truth is that not all crappies move to deep water during the winter months.

James Lindner: Get back to the basics for early-ice panfish

In our neck of the woods, the open-water fishing season officially has ended. As I’m writing this, my boat has been winterized and is in storage for the foreseeable future.
In general, early ice fishing is a sort of boot-strap affair – a spud bar in one hand and small sled with all the basics in the other. Using the proper tools and tactics, in the right situation, ultimately will lead to promising results. The strategies that fishermen employ are constantly evolving. In terms of ice fishing, these shifts are apparent.

Always, change: The angling revolutions

Perhaps the most important modern advancements in fishing technology revolve around electronics. The development of sonar technologies such as side-imaging, down-imaging, and, most recently, forward-facing sonar, have forever changed fishing for many anglers.
