James Lindner: New tools plus adaptable anglers has transformed ice angling

The sport of ice angling is constantly evolving. With every passing season, new products hit the market. Some introductions are short-lived, while others have a significant effect on the ways in which anglers fish.
In general, it seems that the best innovations are those that result in improved efficiently or reliability. The advancements of today have significantly surpassed those that occurred in previous decades.

James Lindner: Trophy hunting for late open-water walleyes

Trophy walleyes – they’re a part of what keeps us ticking. The anticipation of that next big bite is a feeling rivaled by few others. Anyone who has targeted them knows just how special they are. But hunting for trophies isn’t for everyone.
Purposely targeting big walleyes requires a shift in mindset from conventional walleye angling.

James Lindner: Target these locations during peak ‘bug hatch’ season

It’s been an interesting season to say the least. Although we experienced the earliest ice-out I can remember in central Minnesota, the cool, wet spring put the brakes on many of the typical seasonal movements of fish.
With a delay in these late spring and early summer progressions, we’ve been finding most of our fish relatively shallow. Take walleyes, for example, which have been using shallow rock and weed flats. Compare that to a so-called “normal” season, when many walleyes already would have moved to deeper water.

James Lindner: Understand the weed factor for icing crappies

Throughout the winter, crappies are among the most popular targets of ice anglers. Most experienced hard-water fishermen are no stranger to the all-too-familiar basin crappie bite. It’s a relatively simple pattern: Crappies dump into soft-bottom basin areas to feed on concentrations of blood worms and zooplankton. And the anglers follow.
While such bites are rather predictable, the truth is that not all crappies move to deep water during the winter months.

James Lindner: Get back to the basics for early-ice panfish

In our neck of the woods, the open-water fishing season officially has ended. As I’m writing this, my boat has been winterized and is in storage for the foreseeable future.
In general, early ice fishing is a sort of boot-strap affair – a spud bar in one hand and small sled with all the basics in the other. I try to keep things to a minimum – an auger, a couple of rods, a small box of baits, and some electronics. For me, and many other anglers, the primary targets for first ice are crappies and bluegills.

Here are the baits that will catch you bass through the entire open-water season

As America’s favorite game-fish species, bass – both largemouth and smallmouth – receive their fair share of attention. With so much interest, there’s no question as to why there are so many lure options on the market. An online search will yield thousands of those options.
There’s a handful of lures that perform extremely well no matter the time of year. They’re players at ice-out and they continue to be a threat until ice-up. I refer to these as the “broad baits” for bass.

Fishing strategies are changing, and increased efficiency comes with greater responsibility

Through my experience, I’ve learned that the key to success for finding and catching fish revolves around strategy. Using the proper tools and tactics, in the right situation, ultimately will lead to promising results. The strategies that fishermen employ are constantly evolving. In terms of ice fishing, these shifts are apparent.
