Full-blown ice season is coming quickly. As I sit down and write this, I expect to see ice-covered lakes across much of the Midwest in the coming weeks, maybe even days.
Similar to their open-water counterparts, ice anglers are far more effective than they’ve ever been when it comes to finding and catching fish. Generally speaking, we have technology to thank for that. It’s helped us to find lakes, find fish and, ultimately, catch fish more efficiently.

Although game-fish seasons are closed across much of the Ice Belt, there are still plenty of opportunities left for ice fishing. Panfish, including crappies, bluegills, and perch, certainly receive the lion’s share of fishing pressure during this period. It’s been an interesting season to say the least. Although we experienced the earliest ice-out I can remember in central Minnesota, the cool, wet spring put the brakes on many of the typical seasonal movements of fish.
With a delay in these late spring and early summer progressions, we’ve been finding most of our fish relatively shallow. Take walleyes, for example, which have been using shallow rock and weed flats.
