Three state properties in Michigan closed to target shooting

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is prohibiting target shooting on three properties in southwest Michigan because the shooting sites involve safety issues, potential resource damage, and conflicts with neighboring properties.
The properties – Three Rivers State Game Area, Cornish State Game Area, and Gordon Guyer-Augusta Creek State Wildlife Area – are all experiencing conflicts because of target shooting.

Bill to give Pennsylvania Game Commission ability to set its own license fees

The Pennsylvania Game Commission could be on the verge of gaining the ability to set its own hunting license fees, similar to authority already given to the Fish & Boat Commission.
On June 21, state Rep. Thomas Mehaffie III, R-Dauphin, introduced House Bill 1440, which allows the Game Commission to change license classifications and set fees. As with the authority already given to the Fish & Boat Commission by the Legislature, the House and Senate Game and Fisheries committees would review any changes before they would be implemented.

Gliding for summer lake trout on New York’s Lake Champlain

It was a scorchingly hot day – by noon it was nearly 100 degrees – as we dropped a relatively new lure made of zinc alloy to Champlain’s beefy lake trout. And the drop was by no means shallow. The area we fished showed depths of 80 to 100 feet, little wonder why we needed 7⁄8-ounce lures to reach bottom before the sun went down.

Basic commands for your hunting dog: Inconsistent commands create inconsistent responses

Sit… sit … come on! … SIT!
Probably not what we should be thinking when we talk about the five commands every hunting dog should know, even though it may be the five commands your dog hears most often. Honestly? You probably don’t even need five commands. Longtime trainer and dog handler Julie Bates says there are three fundamental responses that will lay excellent groundwork for a great relationship with your hunting pup.

Dog breed profile: Gordon setters are the “black avenger of the highlands”

A couple summers ago, my wife’s aunt asked if we could dog-sit one of her canines for a fortnight. Thus began my crash course in Gordon setters.

An early riser, I’d take 4-year-old female “Vegas” for three-mile walk-runs at sunrise to beat the late June humidity. A rural gal who normally bounds freely in a huge, fenced-in enclosure, Vegas wasn’t thrilled with suburban leash work.

Ohio River fish kill along Illinois banks did not make a dent in invasive carp populations

A spring fish kill along the Illinois banks of the Ohio River seems to have subsided, but not before alarming a number of anglers.
Thousands of dead fish floated down the Ohio back in May and into June, littering the riverbank. Turns out, it was a typical seasonal event unofficially referred to as “Gas Bubble Disease. While many sportfish fell victim to this year’s kill, there was a silver lining – literally.

Dog owners, anglers in Illinois told to watch for algae blooms

Letting your lab or other hunting dog take a dip in the lake after a brisk workout is common during the “dog days” of summer in Illinois.
But DNR and other agencies are warning people – and dog owners – to be mindful of harmful algae blooms on the water. Anglers are being warned, too. Handling fish during an active bloom on a lake or pond increases the risk of skin exposure and “should be limited or avoided.”
