In the most recent survey of the status of the fishery, DNR personnel captured 1,837 fish representing 20 species.

Right now is a good time to look for those fish, too.

A 10-pound, 4-ounce saugeye, which held the state record for a period, was caught here in 1989.

In latest survey, bluegill numbers were through-the-roof high, and the crappie population looked better than average as well.

Changes in the bass population is credited to the fact that the lake itself is changing.

Survey highlights include above-average walleye and yellow perch year classes, the highest YOY sauger catch rate since 2010 and strong adult catches for yellow perch and bluegills.

The lake is heavily stocked with walleye fry, and there’s some natural reproduction that occurs at times. But it’s the stocked fish that have maintained one of this area’s healthiest walleye populations through the years.

Successful lake trout anglers focus their efforts on the deepest water in Maceday.

There is good access all around the lake, thanks to a trail system, but the western shoreline that hugs the ridge and the dam breast is where most of the action will take place.
