Minnesota celebrates 75 years of wildlife management areas: ‘Save the Wetlands’ to 1.38M acres

Beginning Friday at National Pheasant Fest and Quail Classic at the Minneapolis Convention Center, the Minnesota DNR will kick off its year-long 75th anniversary celebration of the state’s much-envied wildlife management area (WMAs) system – a program that began as a way to save wetlands in era of breakneck drainage.
State officials say the 75th anniversary celebration, which will include events across Minnesota throughout 2026, highlights a system that protects wildlife habitat for future generations, provides access for hunting, fishing, trapping and other outdoor recreation, and promotes wildlife-based tourism across the state.

Spring light goose orders kicking off in the Upper Midwest; here’s what conditions look like

Even several years after his first spring snow goose hunt, Scott Doheny of New Prague, Minn., takes pleasure in recalling the details.
“We found a huge mass of feeding birds my first morning and set ourselves up to pass-shoot them,” said Doheny, an avid waterfowl hunter. “The fog that morning was thick, with very little breeze. I remember getting out of my truck and hearing them get up and start to peel off from the roost. It was deafening.”

So you want to own a quality fly rod? Here’s what to consider

It was a cold winter’s night in 1992.
My money clip was fat. I had finally saved enough random $10 and $20 bills for a purchase I had been pondering for months. A purchase, mind you, that would transform my outdoors life. The short backstory: Two years before, I had burned through “A River Runs Through It,” the classic novella by Norman Maclean, in less than a week.

Life for a 2026 Farm Bill? Conservation officials ‘cautiously optimistic’

U.S. House Agriculture Committee Chairman Glenn Thompson (R-Pa.) informed his Republican colleagues that he hopes to mark up a new federal Farm Bill the last week of February, a development that has national conservation officials cautiously optimistic that a new bill could pass this year.
The blueprint is expected to be similar to the bill approved by the agricultural committee in spring 2024, conservation officials say.

Looking for huge spring flocks? Here are four destinations to hunt north-bound snow geese

Like clockwork every late winter and early spring, millions of snow geese begin their grueling 3,000-mile-plus journey from their wintering areas in the southern United States to their Canadian arctic breeding grounds.
The winged push north – the arduous prelude to nesting season – is a stunning aerial display that defies description, an outdoors attraction that spring snow goose hunters participating in the federal spring “conservation order” relish.

Public comment sought as Minnesota reviews groundwater protection

Minnesota Trout Unlimited and other state clean water advocacy organizations are encouraging the public to submit written comments to the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) as the agency reviews the state’s groundwater protection rule to determine if it’s adequate to protect Minnesota’s waters from nitrate pollution.

Minnesota DNR solicits comments on Robbins Marsh project, as feds plan drawdown at Big Stone National Wildlife Refuge

The Minnesota DNR is accepting public comment through Feb. 7 on a proposed plan that would designate Robbins Marsh in Murray County – a popular regional waterfowling destination – as a wildlife lake.
State officials say the wildlife lake designation is important for shallow-lake management because it gives the DNR legal authority to use a water-control structure for temporary water-level drawdowns. The proposed project, if approved, would include building and operating such a structure.

As new ice anglers enter the fold, here’s a primer on proper etiquette

The conservation officer wasn’t pleased. Nor were the ice anglers who happened by that winter afternoon.
The site: a Mississippi River backwater near Wabasha in southeastern Minnesota, a mile or so from a common entry point for anglers who were willing to get their cardio in by chasing bluegills, black crappies, perch, and northern pike.
