How was bird hunting in Minnesota in 2025? Some hits, and a few misses

Bob St. Pierre had to get out one last time before Minnesota’s ruffed grouse season slammed shut at sunset on Jan. 4. After all, the iconic forest game bird he loves to hunt beckoned. So, on Jan. 2, he did.
“I tried to go hunting up near Hinckley. I had to get out one last time before the season closed,” said St. Pierre, the chief marketing and communications officer for St. Paul-based Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever. “But …”

North Dakota’s Devils Lake to get stocked adult perch in spring ’26

The North Dakota Game and Fish Department is putting the finishing touches on a plan to stock adult yellow perch into Devils Lake next spring, an effort that local tourism officials and area fishing guides advocated for during talks this summer with state natural resources officials, including department director Jeb Williams.

Pheasant study from Minnesota looks at prevalence of neonicotinoids

If you’ve hunted pheasants on a state wildlife management area in southwestern Minnesota during the past two years on or near the opener of the season, you may have happened upon a Minnesota DNR wildlife official with an odd request.
“We asked hunters if we could have one of their harvested birds,” said Steven Woodley, Minnesota DNR upland game research scientist, who works in the agency’s Madelia office. “We were looking for a donation.”
The pitch also came with an explanation.

Late-season bird hunting creates enduring memories

The weather provocateurs on the local TV news were giddy with anticipation last week, beating the drums like over-caffeinated jazz percussionists about the prospects of a second snowstorm in roughly a week.
A “long-duration winter system” had begun to settle in southern Minnesota, a wintry event that would eventually move north into the Twin Cities, ushering in periods of heavy snow, blustery winds, and “the coldest air of the season.”

Winter trout-fishing options are ample across Minnesota

There’s lake trout fishing in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and elsewhere – even on Lake Superior if Mother Nature turns her frigid best and makes enough for ice for anglers in and around Duluth and Two Harbors. There are the state’s so-called stream-trout lakes that have grown in popularity in recent years.

Habitat help on the way for waterfowl? New Delta initiative focuses on refuges, WMAs

Delta Waterfowl has launched an ambitious new program to improve waterfowl hunting across the United States by advocating for increased habitat-improvement funding for federal and state public lands.
The effort is called Restoring Our Refuges, an advocacy campaign to “secure enhanced public funding to revitalize the health and waterfowl value of federal refuges and state-owned wildlife management areas” across the U.S.

Inseparable: Minnesota’s Bill Berg and the sharptail connection

At age 85, Bill Berg’s conservation fire still burns white-hot.
The retired and respected wildlife research biologist from Knife River still has today a passion for wildlife, wildlife research, and wildlife management. That’s especially true for a game species he’s studied and describes as largely forgotten in Minnesota: the sharp-tailed grouse.

Bird hunting in Minnesota takes backseat to deer, but quality hunting is ahead

Every year, when the firearms deer season opens like it did last Saturday, bird-hunting participation across Minnesota plummets.
Indeed, many of the state’s waterfowl, pheasant, and ruffed grouse hunters take to their deer stands, with many, state officials say, casing their shotguns for good until next season.
Bird hunting in November and December can be some of the year’s best and most exciting – despite the onset of wintry elements.

Minnesota’s Voyageurs Wolf Project reports 31% decrease in Greater Voyageurs Ecosystem wolf population

The much-studied wolf population in the Greater Voyageurs Ecosystem (GVE) of northern Minnesota is at its lowest level in roughly the past decade.
The population – estimated at 100 wolves – dropped 19% the past year, according to the 2024-2025 Greater Voyageurs Ecosystem Wolf Population Report. The Voyageurs Wolf Project (VWP) recently released the report. The group’s researchers have been studying wolves in the 218,000-acre GVE (which includes Voyageurs National Park) since 2014.
