Minnesota’s resident megafauna – the black bear – is one of the state’s great conservation success stories during the past several decades, its population expanding both in numbers and geographically.
Today, the state’s population hovers between 13,000 and 18,000 and continues a gradual comeback from 2012, when numbers declined by roughly 50% from the highs of the early 2000s. Bear hunting, meanwhile, is growing in popularity.
