Carney: Heated vests are nice, but lack battery life

I’ll admit it: I’m getting soft in my old age. Some of my hunting buddies have been using heated vests in the field the past couple of seasons, so I decided to give them a try. The modern heated vests are not your daddy’s vest, but rather a really impressive unit just because of the innovations in lithium batteries.

Minnesota’s fall fish bite has been late in arriving

Many anglers suffer through the months of August and September in hopes of a renewed fall bite that sometimes shows up and sometimes doesn’t.
Back in the day, the fall bite always started on Labor Day weekend. Nowadays, the good fishing doesn’t seem to ramp up until mid-October, and sometimes later than that. Maybe it’s extended warm weather in fall.

Steve Carney bags a fall tom after four failed attempts

Finally, after four unsuccessful spot-and-stalk turkey hunts, I connected on a 22-pound tom that sported an 11-inch beard.
I love to hunt turkeys in the fall, and I use an old-school type of spot and stalk. Turkeys have a tendency to follow a direct route in the fall, and when you see them walking along a tree line or fence line, you can bet the farm they’re heading directly to a destination. Rarely will they veer off and change direction.

Early-season ducks, and a report from the deer stand

So far, the early duck season has been rather dismal. I have been hunting in various areas of the state, and it’s been a tough go.
Fortunately, blue-winged teal have been the most prevalent bird in the bag so far, with few mallards, gadwalls, and wigeon. I am certainly not impressed with the bird numbers, and things seem far slower than in previous years.

Low-water woes, and a ‘blue’ pike from Otter Tail County, Minnesota

The low-water woes continue as we slide into late September. This low-water issue is a factor for both fishing and for duck hunting.
I had a backwater area scoped out for the early duck season, only to find it dry and unhuntable. Checking your duck areas prior to hunting is imperative this season because many sloughs, backwater areas, and river systems are as low as I have ever seen them.

Brady Oberg Legacy Foundation gets vets on the water

I recently had the pleasure of quarterbacking a fishing event for 10 fellow veterans near Battle Lake, Minn. I managed to get a group of fishing buddies together to assist, and my guiding group consisted of Mike Jordahl, Jim Merickel, Dan Olson, and Jay Miller – all Otter Tail County residents and awesome anglers.
Our mission was to provide a morning of fishing for veterans, sponsored by the Brady Oberg Legacy Foundation. This foundation was established by a group of people who loved Brady, grieved for him, and wanted to keep his personal tragedy from happening to others.
