Steve Carney: Minnesota duck season begins with a whimper, and some early archery success

My second hunt location this season was on a private slough in the heart of so-called duck country in the northwest, and the results were the same: poor. This beautiful slough was not hunted on opening weekend, so we assumed there would be a buildup of birds when we arrived.

Steve Carney: Ways to beat the heat during early archery deer sits, and a turkey vulture assist

The early bow season in Minnesota brought with it a real “sweat-fest.” The cooler weather for deer hunting has been welcome.
The challenge of toughing out 80-degree evening sits can be real early in the deer season. Here are some thoughts on staying somewhat cool.

Steve Carney: With the Ned rig, like all baits, there’s some good, some bad

When you hang around a group of bass anglers, the talk frequently turns to the Ned rig. I often have clients who ask to fish the rig, but I must tell them that I have not exactly fallen in love with this style of bait. I’ve had good days and bad days with it.
At first glance, the Ned rig looks almost comical and, honestly, too simple. But there is a time and place for this bait.

Steve Carney: Take time to slow down and fish a river

Small river systems are easy to read, and just the other day I caught a variety of species, from walleyes to bass to perch and bullheads – all by hovering my boat in the gentle current and pitching baits to fishy-looking areas. I concentrated on current breaks and under bridge abutments.

Steve Carney: Find the sweet spot for summer weedbed walleyes

It’s amazing how on the same body of water, you can catch super-deep walleyes and also walleyes swimming in shallow weedbeds. I’m convinced that there are separate populations of deep and shallow walleyes on most lakes.
Recently, a shallow spinner presentation has been working well for me. Properly matched terminal tackle is the key to success. Here are some fishing tips for weed-top walleyes.

Steve Carney: Here’s how to catch crappies in August

August can be a cruel month for crappie anglers, as we all know, but there are still opportunities out there if you’re creative and willing to try new methods.
I’ve been finding crappies recently that have all been suspended in deep water; 28 feet of water has been the norm almost everywhere I’ve fished, with the fish about 15 feet down.

Steve Carney: Another story of stupidity, and plenty of suspended baitfish

When I look back at 45 years of guiding anglers, I have done some really dumb things. But recently, there was a notable addition to the list.
For background: In the past, I’ve dropped my boat off a roller trailer onto a cement ramp. And I’ve had a couple of boat fires. And I’ve had a trailer separate from my ball hitch on a major highway while I traveled at 70 mph. There have been countless other snafus that I will not divulge. But this recent one rates right up there.
