Steve Carney: Changes needed in Minnesota after 2024 waterfowl season leaves much to be desired

Mercifully, for this hunter, anyway, the duck season has ended in Minnesota.
I have thought a lot about this year’s season and the lack of ducks, so here are some observations that have been on my mind.

Steve Carney: A well-deserved bow buck, and a great Minnesota fall walleye bite

My longtime hunting buddy, Paul Schutte, of Annandale, Minn., just celebrated his 70th birthday. He almost didn’t reach this milestone after he suffered a major stroke last fall.
Paul spent the entire year rehabilitating, including therapy while trying to regain motion and strength. It’s been a long and difficult road.
Paul has always been a bowhunting fanatic. He believes the traditional vertical bow is what bowhunting is all about.

Steve Carney: Tips for using a deer decoy in late November

This is the time of the deer-hunting season when I pull out my doe decoy that I’ve named “Bess.” She rests comfortably in my pole building all season, and then, when the whitetail rut arrives, she heads back to the field with me.
Utilizing a deer decoy can enhance your chances for success. Here are the reasons – and some tips – for why I use a deer decoy in late November.

Steve Carney: An unexpected lighting system success for the duck boat

I finally found time to enhance my duck boat lighting system, but it was a real chore. I started with some UTV light bars, and it took me several hours to attach them with a 2X4 board. Then, after a morning duck hunt, I found myself disappointed in the range of the beam.
The light bar was rated at 7,800 lumens, which is a measurement on the power of the unit. I removed the bars and came up with a better solution using items I had in my garage.

Steve Carney: A Minnesota duck update, and a bad experience in the deer blind

I recently spent an afternoon in a ground blind I set up last August. I was anticipating some deer-hunting action on this perfect late afternoon.
After an hour or so in the blind, I heard some sporadic rifle shots to my north. It didn’t sound like target practice, but rather someone probably hunting squirrels or rabbits. The sixth shot I heard came right over my ground blind, and I heard the leaves above me scatter.

Steve Carney: The great doe stare-down, and a pulley assist for the truck bed

I hated the ladder stand the minute I climbed into it. It’s a double-wide, two-person stand that’s on a single tree. The bottom line: I was uncomfortable because I looked like a human billboard.
And then it happened. A huge doe stepped out of the poplars at 225 yards and busted me right away. She looked left and started toward me from at least two football fields away.

Mid-October bowhunts: Morning or evening?

The early bow season has started out fairly well with lots of deer on the move. I’ve suffered through some really hot evenings on stand, but now the weather has turned, which means more deer movement and some pre-rut activity is on the way.
But do I hunt during the morning or evening? This is an interesting question, often debated among archers. Some of them hunt mornings only because of work conflicts, while others prefer evenings.
