Littering in our woods and waters is a problem we need to solve

How many times as kids were we told by our parents to pick up after ourselves, to clean our rooms, to clean up the trash? Yet, as I look along our roadsides and ditches and at our lakes and beaches, I don’t think we really learned to pick up after ourselves.
It seems that here in the Iowa Great Lakes, one of the worst areas for littering is in Millers Bay on West Okoboji Lake during the summer.

Iowa fisheries biologist discusses the importance of aquatic plants

Anglers have a love-hate relationship with submerged vegetation. They know that the vegetation is a huge key for better fishing. It creates a safe haven for young fish, allowing them to escape from bigger predators, while it also provides a haven for the predator fish as well. That is to the point that the vegetation gets so thick that anglers can’t cast through the weeds.
Boaters and lake homeowners have their problems with vegetation too when it reaches a certain point. But Iowa DNR fisheries biologist Mike Hawkins details why aquatic plants are so important to a body of water’s ecosystem.

Iowa clay target program offers opportunity for kids of nearly all ages and ability levels

The Scholastic Clay Target Program is a nation-wide, team-based clay target shooting program for grade, middle, high school and collegiate shooters. Established in Iowa in 2006, SCTP has grown by leaps and bounds to a record number 4,493 Iowa youngsters in 2022. Iowa’s SCTP is a coed sport with the leadership of 500 certified coaches.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources serves as the state advisor for the SCTP program and is responsible for providing assistance to new teams, training coaches, overseeing competition leagues and the state championships.

Iowans report a strong 2022 pheasant season in areas of good habitat

Greg Harson, Conservation Officer District 1 Supervisor for northwest Iowa, says the roadside count was right on and maybe even better than expected. Across the northern tier of counties, the late October opener was one of the best in recent years.
“Hunters saw a lot of birds,” Harson said. “The cover was pretty dry, which made it tougher for the dogs. Yet, officers found hunters throughout the district pleased with the numbers of birds they saw.”
How might this winter impact bird numbers heading into 2023?

A historical look at Iowa Great Lakes’ walleye opener and previewing the 41st Walleye Weekend

Ever since I moved to northwest Iowa in 1978, I’ve participated in the annual walleye opener on three lakes on the Iowa Great Lakes: Big Spirit, East Okoboji and West Okoboji.
Each year, the walleye season closes on those lakes in mid-February and does not reopen until the first full weekend in May. These are the only waters in the state of Iowa with this regulation, with the exception of some Iowa-Minnesota boundary lakes.

Iowa State’s Dr. James Pease addresses water-quality concerns for Iowa’s rivers, streams

More and more Iowans are understanding the issue facing clean water in the Hawkeye State.
Dr. James Pease, emeritus associate professor of Natural Resource Ecology and Management at Iowa State University, recently presented a seminar on the topic titled “Reflections: Connecting Wildlife and Water Quality” where Pease discussed the importance of clean water in our lakes and river systems.
