Collaborative effort turns railway into long trail system for Iowa’s outdoor users

A major project is about to complete Phase IV that will connect the city of Lake Park with the entire Iowa Great Lake Trails system. The connection will comprise nearly 12 miles of new trail construction between the two communities.
When the entire development of the “rail-trail” is complete, it will span from just west of Superior to Orleans, to Spirit Lake, to Montgomery and finally to Lake Park in Dickinson County for a length of 23 miles. Osceola County will complete their portion of the trail that goes through Harris, Allendorf, Ocheyedan and then to the Ed Winkel Trail near Sibley for a total length of 43 miles.

Iowa DNR hoping for more participation in 2023 Walleye Challenge to best manage walleye waters

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is partnering for a second year with MyCatch by Angler’s Atlas to conduct a statewide walleye fishing challenge running May 1 through June 30. The more participation there is from anglers, the better data the agency can collect to best manage Iowa’s walleye waters. Participating anglers are encouraged to report all the walleye they catch in May and June through the MyCatch mobile app.

Spring is the time for crappies on a cane pole

Kevan Paul, who owns Kevan Paul’s Guide Service and guides clients across northern Iowa, says Clear Lake is his go-to lake for May crappie fishing. Paul likes to use a long ago favorite for lots of anglers: the cane pole.
“This time of year on Clear Lake the crappies are up in the heavy cover of pencil weeds,” Paul said. “It’s so thick that you really can’t cast with a regular rod and reel.”

The Bass Federation’s (TBF) Student Angler Federation (SAF) Iowa state championship is scheduled for May 20 on the Okoboji Chain of Lakes. The Student Angler Federation gives kids an opportunity to fish competitively by promoting the formation of fishing clubs and outdoor activities within schools.
There will be both Junior (grades 3-8) and High School (grades 9-12) categories at the Iowa state championship. They will be trying to earn a qualifying spot for the Junior World Championships or the High School National Championships, respectively.

Teamwork helps complete Iowa’s annual spring gillnetting for walleye

While the Iowa Great Lakes were still covered with ice, Storm Lake and Clear Lake were open, and with the warm weather, the water temperatures shot up rapidly, and gill netting took off at those facilities.
The gill netting went so well that by Wednesday, April 12, the full quota of eggs had been reached without needing anything from the Spirit Lake Hatchery. Hawkins notes that Storm Lake spawned out 890 female walleyes producing 631 quarts of eggs, while Clear Lake spawned out 670 female walleyes producing 356 quarts of eggs.

Continuous Conservation Reserve Program a win-win for Iowans

As an outdoor enthusiast and conservationist, I have always appreciated what the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) has brought to America’s landowners since President Ronald Reagan signed it into law in 1985. In simple terms, this is the idea behind CRP: landowners/farmers who enroll their land in the program agree to remove environmentally sensitive land from
