Minnesota Governor’s opener event highlights angling’s impact

Mike Schwieters, owner of Boyd Lodge in Crosslake, said this past weekend he hadn’t seen such perfect weather for a Minnesota fishing opener since the 1980s, and that he was excited for people to get out on the water for the 77th Governor’s Fishing Opener, this year held in that city, and attended by Gov. Tim Walz and other state officials.
“The purpose of this is really to highlight the outdoor activities,” Walz told Outdoor News regarding the fishing opener tradition.

Minnesota DNR grants non-exclusive lease to dog clubs at Keystone WMA

Since April 15, the Minnesota Federation of Field Trial Clubs, Inc., a group of various dog clubs in Minnesota, has been operating under a non-exclusive lease to access, field-trial, and train their dogs on Keystone Woods Wildlife Management Area in the northeast Twin Cities metro area. The lease allows the clubs to access about 340 acres of Keystone’s 1,820 acres until Aug. 31, 2025, before fall hunting begins.
“Having access to this land and the thought of losing it is why we’re fighting so hard,” said Pete Aplikowski, president of the North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association in Minnesota, one of the federation’s members.

Trapping season changes appear to have minimal effect in Minnesota

After rolling out regulation changes for trapping bobcats, fishers, and otters this year, it’s been informative for the Minnesota DNR researchers behind the scenes to assess how the changes may have affected preliminary harvest.
As of Wednesday, April 30, DNR Wildlife Research Biologist John Erb said the preliminary harvest numbers he received totaled around 979 bobcats, 650 fishers, and 651 pine marten. Fishers are seeing the highest increase in harvest with a jump of about 18% over last year’s total.

There are new fishing regulations to brush up on ahead of Minnesota’s opener

With the Minnesota fishing opener Saturday, there are several new statewide and regional regulations that anglers should be mindful of before hitting the water.
Statewide, there is now a continuous, combined total of 30 white bass and yellow bass, a bag limit of four on burbot, and a cisco and whitefish possession limit of 15. There’s a handful of special regulations changing limits on certain species, including crappies.

Minnesota DNR wraps up walleye egg wrangling

When entering the annual season of the Minnesota DNR’s walleye egg take, it’s never certain at the start how many will come from a particular location because it’s a moving target, depending on how productive some spots are compared with others.
“If things are going better with one strain of egg take than with another, we might take more eggs at that location,” said Paula Phelps, the DNR’s fish production supervisor. Phelps pointed to this year’s success with the Lower Mississippi strain of walleyes from the Cannon River, Knife Lake, and Lake Sarah.

Minnesota’s spring turkey season on track for top-two finish in harvest

As of early May, it’s no surprise that the 2025 turkey harvest is still on course to likely break the top five rank for all-time harvest, coming in with around 13,220 birds so far this spring.
“If we didn’t have another registered turkey, which obviously won’t be the case, that would be good for the fourth-highest harvest, all time,” said Nate Huck, Minnesota DNR migratory game-bird consultant.

Minnesota House OKs its budget for state environment

In a minutes-long meeting on Thursday, May 1, the Minnesota Senate Environment, Climate, and Legacy Committee moved policy bills previously pulled from omnibus bill S.F. 2077 to S.F. 2781, a bill that modifies environmental review reporting requirements.
The crossbow-for-all extension, elimination of the firearms deer-hunting shotgun zone, youth earning bear preference points, beaver consumption, trapping hours change, continuous bass season, and commercial harvest of burbot on Lake Superior are included in this new package.

Hen mallard steals the show on the Minnesota DNR’s EagleCam

When Minnesota DNR staff with the Nongame Wildlife Program situated a camera on its resident eagle pair’s nest along the Mississippi River this fall, they didn’t expect the pair to set up a new nest about 300 yards away.
For the past several months, there hasn’t been up-close, live-nesting coverage – until a female mallard was discovered in the former nest. And thus, the DuckCam was born.

Minnesota DNR looking into how county handled killing of an elk

On Jan. 31, 2025, the Kittson County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a resident after he allegedly shot and killed an elk that was grazing on his property, according to a sheriff’s report.
According to Kittson County Sheriff Matthew Vig’s report dated April 25, as several elk were walking past the residence of Carl Christopherson, Christopherson allegedly grabbed his .223 rifle, opened his kitchen window, and shot one of the elk in the head.
