Minnesota’s omnibus environment bill headed to Gov. Walz

Minnesota’s 2025 legislative session has officially ended after a one-day special session on Monday, June 9, when the House and Senate focused on passing bills for Gov. Tim Walz’s signature.
Among the first omnibus packages to pass the Senate, then a few hours later in the House of Representatives, was the environment and natural resources bill – SF 3. The Senate voted 38-29 in favor and House voted 105-26 in favor of it.

Minnesota turkey hunters set new harvest record in spring 2025

In the end, the more than 59,000 turkey hunters who went after gobblers this spring topped the harvest record that was set last year. They did that by taking about 16,880 turkeys as of Tuesday, June 3, according to the Minnesota DNR.
DNR Migratory Gamebird Consultant Nate Huck said Tuesday that it’s likely a few more harvested birds will be registered in coming days and weeks to ultimately reach the final harvest tally – somewhere in the 16,900s, which surpasses the 2024 spring season’s record of 16,714.

The goal of hosting the event is to help young student-athletes create relationships with law enforcement officers or firefighters who serve their community.

Key policies find their way into Minnesota bill for environment

On Thursday, May 29, the Environment and Natural Resources Working Group reached bipartisan agreement on its budget bill that includes a few policy changes.
As of Outdoor News’ press time Gov. Tim Walz hadn’t called for a special session. But the House and Senate members of the working group anticipate the bill passing without change when it hits their respective floors for final approval.

Minnesota DNR bands St. Paul eaglets before they fly the coop

For the first time in three years, the Minnesota DNR’s Nongame Wildlife Program, in coordination with the U.S. Geological Survey, banded the young eagles that the agency has monitored through the winter and spring. Banding is the process of placing tags on young eagles’ legs to identify where they came from and approximate date of birth.
“Even though we were not able to watch them on camera this year, we decided we would band them because banding is very important for following bald eagles, and other birds,” said Lori Naumann, the information officer for the DNR’s Nongame Wildlife Program.

Some young adults and youth boat operators need license on July 1 in Minnesota

Starting July 1, 2025, some young adults and youth who operate watercraft in Minnesota will need to possess a valid watercraft operator’s permit – a boating license – as required by a 2023 state statute.
This July deadline will not apply to every motorboat or personal watercraft operator in Minnesota. For the July 1, 2025, deadline, people who must possess the valid permit are those 12 years old up to those born after June 30, 2004. So anyone who turns 21 after June 30, 2025 and younger will need the permit. Minnesotans older than that will not need the permit, yet.

Minnesota Becoming an Outdoors Woman committee member hits ‘Great Lakes slam’

Growing up in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Jennifer Dums’ first taste of fishing the Great Lakes started young with Lake Superior practically in her backyard.
“I’ve been fishing since I was a little kid. My dad used to take me fishing, and I grew up in the U.P. of Michigan basically on Lake Superior … so I’ve always been around the Great Lakes in that respect,” Dums said.
In that region, being outdoors hunting and fishing is intrinsically tied to the way of life she has began imparting on others through her work.
