Ice-fishing weather forecasts appear promising in Ohio

While meteorologists can often not even accurately forecast the next day’s weather, some try each summer or fall to predict how severe the winter will be in the various regions of North America.
One of the most anticipated, but not necessarily reliable, long-range winter forecasts are the ones offered by the Old Farmer’s Almanac and Farmer’s Almanac.

Lake Erie’s Western Basin perch fishing has been tough despite high abundance

For anglers who heeded the Ohio Division of Wildlife’s advice to target “Erie Gold” in the Western Basin after the surface temperatures climbed over 75 degrees and reduced spiny water flea densities, there have only been a few brief windows of opportunities when the perch have cooperated by feeding on shiners offered as bait – even after surface temperatures exceeded 80.

Where does all of that fish waste go after processing a day’s catch?

The privately owned commercial fish cleaning houses and campgrounds contacted for this story either spread out their customer’s fish waste and covered them with wood chips, bury them in pits under the soil, or use dumpsters to have them hauled off-site for processing into compost or disposed of at a landfill.

Great Lakes’ burbot in a state of semi-peril

The burbot is a species of fish that only a fraction of Ohio anglers have ever heard of, much less caught, even though they are widely distributed from Maine to Alaska, including many lakes in Canada.
Closer to home, they are found in all of the Great Lakes and throughout many lakes in the Upper Midwest. Michigan fisheries staff are concerned that fishing pressure on this fish combined with diminishing food sources are pushing numbers lower in multiple locations.

Campbell’s Soup admits to polluting Maumee River

In a court document issued on Sept. 15, Campbell’s Soup Supply Co. admitted to some 5,400 pollution discharges between April 2018 and December 2024 in violation of the Clean Water Act.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was joined by the National Environmental Law Center, on behalf of the Lake Erie Waterkeepers and Environment Ohio, in a lawsuit filed in March 2024 to force the company to correct long-standing problems with its wastewater treatment plant.

Ohio Lake sturgeon implanted with acoustic tags as part of longterm study

The Ohio DNR Division of Wildlife’s (DOW) Sandusky Fisheries Research Unit is partnering with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Ohio State University, and the University of Toledo to electronically tag lake sturgeon with acoustic tags procured by the USGS.
Fisheries biologist Matt Faust, who is leading this new project that started in June, said that “The purpose of this study is to allow the DOW to learn more about the habitat use and where/when these tagged individuals spend their time over the next 10 years.

Ohio’s Lake Erie fish ‘cutters’ stay busy with day’s haul

A necessary evil of catching fish from Lake Erie is that in order to enjoy their culinary benefits they must be processed in some manner.
Most species are typically filleted, skinned, and de-boned, while others are just beheaded and gutted. And in the case of catfish, filleted and usually skinned, depending upon the intended method of cooking. Some of the state parks located on bodies of water where fish are often harvested have a fish cleaning facility to process fish.

Lake sturgeon will be stocked in several Ohio locations this fall

This October, in addition to planting fingerling lake sturgeon into the Maumee River as has been done since 2018, and the Cuyahoga River, which was first done last year, the Genoa Federal Fish Hatchery will be bringing additional fish to plant for the first time in the Sandusky River and Cattaraugus Creek in New York.
These efforts are all in the name of re-establishing spawning populations in streams where the ancient species, which dates back 135 million years, historically occurred.
