This year’s walleye hatch means more good news for anglers in Western Lake Erie

This summer, perch anglers were inundated with young-of-year walleyes, with many reports of double-digit landings of the aggressive, fast-growing, fingerling fish being caught on perch rigs baited with shiner minnows.
Thus, it was no surprise when the Ohio Lake Erie Fisheries Research Station shared its August trawling observations at the October Ohio Wildlife Council meeting suggesting another “exceptional” walleye hatch occurred this spring in Western Lake Erie.

Ice forming but remains uncertain for Ohio waters of Lake Erie

As of mid-December, there were some locations where anxious ice anglers were walking on Ohio water and pulling fish through their augured or chipped holes.
Near Ohio’s north coast, the Kelleys Island ferry was pushing floes of pancake ice aside as they ran their route in the channel from there and Marblehead.

November winds hammer Lake Erie, making life difficult for anglers

November has become a popular time for anglers to still be out on Lake Erie plying their hobby. In recent years, thousands of anglers have been seeking fame and fortune fishing for “the big one” in two major walleye derbies, which concluded on Nov. 30.
However, this has been one of the windiest fall boating seasons in recent memory, with conditions unsuitable for boating, especially in smaller vessels.

Debbie Walters’ career climbs up the ladder of Ohio’s Division of Wildlife

As the number of my college classmates, former work mates, and other professional fisheries management peers join the ranks of the retired, one that continues to clock in for work remains Ohio Division of Wildlife District 5 Fisheries Supervisor Debbie Walters.
A native of St. Louis, Missouri, her first fisheries experience was working in reservoirs for the Missouri Department of Conservation doing research that studied crappie habitat preferences.

Prison butchering program helps with Ohio’s surplus deer

In a cooperative agreement signed on Sept. 24 between the Ohio DNR (ODNR) and the Ohio Penal Industries (OPI) at the Pickaway Correctional Institution, participating incarcerated adults received specific training on processing deer to be donated for distribution from local food pantries.
For the time being, the only deer being accepted at OPI are those that come from those procured by the ODNR Division of Wildlife biologists and other government culls.

Venison donations can help balance Ohio’s deer herd

With deer numbers continuing to increase, in all but the most highly affected areas ravaged by EHD this season, the Ohio Division of Wildlife (DOW) is inviting hunters to consider shooting extra deer this season to donate to organizations who can provide venison to people facing food insecurity.
At the time of this writing, there have been 29 deer accepted so far by the DOW.

Study shows walleye stocks spawning in Lake Erie’s Central Basin

In July, a paper published in the Journal of Freshwater Ecology spoke of an Ohio Division of Wildlife (DOW) research project entitled “Evidence of nearshore in-lake spawning walleye in the Central Basin of Lake Erie.”
DOW’s Fairport Harbor Fisheries Research Station biologists Carey T. Knight, Ann Marie Gorman, and Graham F. Montague documented that spawning and successful reproduction is occurring in the Central Basin of Lake Erie near Fairport Harbor. Lake Erie walleyes are known to have genetically distinct stocks that often return to the same locations to spawn annually, known as site fidelity.

Ohio’s Maumee River said to be at lowest level since at least 1988

After a wet spring that saw 11.34 inches of rain fall through May, which was 2.7 inches above average, a severe drought developed over the summer in northwest Ohio.
It has continued into the fall and from Aug. 1 to Oct. 15, only 2.22 inches of rain was recorded in Toledo, which is 4.98 inches below average. As a result, the Maumee River is at the lowest that it has been since 1988, according to several residents of Grand Rapids, Waterville, and Maumee.
