University of Minnesota Forestry Center in state-tribal land transfer negotiations

A bill in the Minnesota Legislature would transfer parcels of state-owned land within the boundaries of the Cloquet Forestry Center to the University of Minnesota. Once that’s completed, the university is planning to transfer all the state- and university-owned land to the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa.
The bill and the university’s intent have generated debate among citizens who support transferring original Fond du Lac reservation land, while others are questioning what this transfer would mean to university students at the center and why the land is being transferred for free.

Minnesota DNR examines steelhead on the Knife River

The sun was shining along the Knife River in the Lake Superior area on Monday, April 15. The Minnesota DNR’s Lake Superior fisheries staff drove along the river and parked by a trap that the agency built in 1996.
Since its creation, the trap has been used to catch steelhead (rainbow trout) for further studies on the population and spawning process of this fish species. DNR staff visit the trap every day during the late winter and early spring to catch these trout and document various characteristics.

First deer ever shot by 23-year-old is a record velvet whitetail in Minnesota

Kyle Bauer, 23, from Owatonna, Minn., had a couple of weeks he’ll never forget in the middle of September 2023. Bauer married his wife, Hannah, on Sept. 23, then took a weeklong vacation to Costa Rica.
Those two events would take the cake for any person in a couple of weeks. How about a cherry and some sprinkles on top of the cake? The sprinkles were harvesting his first whitetail. And the cherry was that the deer is the Minnesota state record for whitetail typical archery velvet deer and likely top five in the world for the same category.

With the Minnesota fishing opener less than a month away, control of the spread of aquatic invasive species is a top priority for the Minnesota DNR. The DNR has long made AIS a central focus, with changes to state laws and efforts to educate anglers and other water recreation enthusiasts.
According to Adam Doll, DNR invasive species prevention consultant, the DNR’s Invasive Species Program traces its origins to the mid-1980s. Since then, it has evolved and changed.
