Minnesota DNR places hold on WMA timber harvest while USFWS awaits info

Timber harvests on state wildlife management areas and aquatic management areas have been put on hold, according to a letter from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Chuck Traxler, to Sarah Strommen, Minnesota DNR commissioner, dated Monday, Aug. 7.

The letter explains that the DNR “has acknowledged that it sold logging permits without providing the necessary advance documentation of the habitat purpose of these sales to the (USFWS),” which is required in the grant to the DNR.

Minnesota’s turkey harvest report indicates spring, fall success

The Minnesota DNR finalized its 2022-23 turkey harvest report last week. The report showed the second-highest harvest numbers for both fall and spring since the state’s modern turkey hunt began.
There are many factors to the success rate for hunters, but the biggest question for turkey experts is, can the success continue for the future?

Red Lake Nation voices concern as plan advances to reintroduce elk in northeast Minnesota

The Minnesota Legislature during its most recent session authorized $2.3 million in spending for the Minnesota DNR to work with the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa to capture elk from northwestern Minnesota and move them to the northeastern part of the state, largely on the Fond du Lac reservation. Now, discussion of action plans between the partners has begun, with a goal of transferring elk by the spring of 2026.
Red Lake Nation officials recently sent a letter to the DNR, stating opposition to the plan that would move elk from Red Lake reservation land and questioning the department’s lack of communication with Red Lake during the planning process.

Minnesota DNR looks at first-ever mushroom, berry ‘bag’ limits for state parks

The Minnesota DNR has began a rule-making process to potentially have its first-ever daily limit on wild mushroom and berry picking at state parks. The agency says the current regulations are vague and can be interpreted differently to anyone, so the DNR believes new rules would give clarification.
Ann Pierce, the DNR’s Parks and Trails Division director, said state parks have seen an increase in forage harvesters. Also, there’s a worry that overharvesting could affect the wildlife that depend on wild mushrooms and berries as well as the soil health.

Minnesota DNR search on Mississippi turns up no Asian carp

The Minnesota DNR’s invasive carp team boated along the Mississippi River last week to track and catch carp in areas the fish reportedly had been seen.
Kayla Stampfle, the DNR’s invasive carp specialist, said the team didn’t track or catch any carp during the two days. She said it’s always good to not catch carp, but she knows that there are carp there; the challenging part is finding them.
