Mike Raykovicz: Examining the evolution of turkey ammunition

I was rooting around the cabinet where I store some of my hunting equipment and discovered boxes of rifled slugs and turkey loads. The sabot rifle slugs are leftovers from the day when only shotguns were legal for hunting deer in the Southern Tier of New York; the turkey loads are another story.
As a long-time turkey hunter, I’m always on the lookout for ways to increase my success, and the evolution of loads specifically designed for hunting turkeys rank at the top of my list.

North Dakota’s 2026 deer season details are set; here’s what to know

One of the biggest days of the year for prospective deer hunters in North Dakota occurred Friday afternoon May 8. It’s when the Game and Fish Department released the framework for the 2026 deer hunting season.
This year’s deer gun season will open Nov. 6 at noon and runs through Nov. 22, as wildlife managers continue a cautious approach aimed at rebuilding the state’s deer herd. The statewide population is still recovering from the lingering impacts of the severe 2022-23 winter, outbreaks of epizootic hemorrhagic disease and a landscape where quality habitat continues to shrink.

An update on Minnesota’s Leech Lake muskellunge study

An ongoing telemetry study on Leech Lake looks to provide great insight regarding behavior and mortality rates (from angling) of muskellunge in Minnesota’s Leech Lake.
The study is possible thanks to cooperation between the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, the Minnesota DNR, Bemidji State University, and MN-FISH. Staffing, scientific methodology/data collection, equipment, plus all the planning and implementation/execution is possible only due to the funding allocation/dedication and successful cooperation of these entities.

Michigan taxidermist bags 484-pound ‘booner’ bear

Award-winning taxidermist Tim Gorenchan from Escanaba, Mich., of North Country Taxidermy spends most of his time preparing life-like mounts of game and fish that other people shoot and catch, but he now will be using his expertise to prepare a mount of a trophy of his own.
He plans on completing a full mount of a Boone and Crockett qualifying black bear he shot in Menominee County last fall while hunting with hounds owned by Cody Welch.

Minnesota DNR achieves some wins in legislative session

The legislative session ended Sunday, May 17, and throughout the session the Minnesota DNR pursued several priorities. While it achieved some goals, others will need to wait until 2027.
Bob Meier, assistant DNR commissioner, highlighted several bills the agency successfully pushed across the finish line, including one of the session’s most important pieces in its final days.

Commentary: Drastic budget cuts will undermine conservation and public lands

Congress decides how to fund federal departments, agencies and programs through an annual appropriations process. The process for fiscal year 2027 (which begins October 1, 2026) began in April with the release of the president’s budget request. That signals the administration’s priorities and frames the negotiations with Congress.
The 2027 budget proposal, like the previous one, again outlines a sweeping and deeply concerning reorganization of America’s natural resource management.

Outdoor Insights: Minnesota legislative session sets bad precedent for future Outdoor Heritage Fund funding debates

The legislation indeed passed before the Legislature adjourned Sunday, and the State Capitol’s streak of getting dedicated sales tax dollars into the ground on time remains in place.

Tyler Frantz: Size matters for Pennsylvania’s wild trout

Sneaking along the shadows of towering hemlocks with a 3-weight fly-rod in hand, the cool mist of a favorite wild trout stream cuts the heat of a sultry summer day.
Dappled sunlight dances through swaying tree branches onto moss covered rocks. Mountain birdsong harmonizes with the therapeutic murmur of trickling water. The entire scene is the definition of pristine serenity.
