Commentary: Drastic budget cuts will undermine conservation and public lands

Congress decides how to fund federal departments, agencies and programs through an annual appropriations process. The process for fiscal year 2027 (which begins October 1, 2026) began in April with the release of the president’s budget request. That signals the administration’s priorities and frames the negotiations with Congress.
The 2027 budget proposal, like the previous one, again outlines a sweeping and deeply concerning reorganization of America’s natural resource management.
