New York’s whitetail harvest up slightly in 2025-26

New York’s white-tailed deer harvest for the 2025-26 hunting seasons rose slightly from that of the season prior, and mostly on par with the five-year average. New York’s estimated total harvest of 227,032 was up 1.7% from 223,304 in 2024. The five year average is 226,061.
The statewide buck take of 120,909 was a 1.2% decrease from the year prior but still above the five-year average of 115,670, while the overall antlerless take of 106,123 was a 5.2% increase from 100,877 in 2024, but lower than the five-year average of 110,391.

National Elk Refuge CWD discovery calls for talk of reducing nation’s largest herd

The discovery of chronic wasting disease on the National Elk Refuge in Wyoming adds urgency to a 2021 plan to reexamine the size of the 11,000-strong Jackson Elk Herd, the nation’s largest migratory herd.
The discovery also raises questions about the annual Scouts’ antler collection and auction, other traditions and practices, and even the safety of nearby Jackson’s water supply. The diagnosis of CWD came after officials killed an ailing cow elk on the refuge just north of Jackson on April 15.

Meet Doug Hartke: Minnesota Outdoor News’ 2026 Person of the Year

When Doug Hartke’s best friend took him duck hunting for the first time when he was a freshman in college, Hartke was well on his way to becoming a volunteer-conservationist par excellence.
Hartke, 59, of Sherburn, was already a member of the well-respected Fox Lake Conservation League (FLCL) in Martin County, located on the Minnesota-Iowa border. In fact, during his senior year in high school, he became a board member.

Partnerships lead to protection of 1,900 acres in Minnesota’s Clay County

A collaborative effort between conservation organizations and state and federal agencies will protect 1,900 acres of native prairie, wetlands and restorable grassland in Clay County, near Fargo-Moorhead in northwestern Minnesota. A long-standing priority area for conservation partners, this acquisition strengthens a growing network of conserved prairie in the Red River Valley.
Pheasants Forever (PF) and The Nature Conservancy (TNC) acquired the property using funds from the Outdoor Heritage Fund.
