Election Day buck shot with a bow may have shot at New York’s record book

A massive white-tailed buck taken Nov. 4 in Ulster County is rumored to have record book potential in the bow typical category, considering it is eventually scored by the New York State Big Buck Club.
The buck, which had 16 scorable points and grossed 208-3⁄8 -inches using the Safari Club International scoring system rather than Boone and Crocket – was taken by life-long hunter Mike Betanzos Jr., of Plattekill. Betanzos, however, while thrilled with the outcome of the hunt, is more concerned about passing the heritage of hunting onto his children and others, and putting food on the table.

Pair pleads guilty to scrap theft from New York DEC

Two subjects recently pleaded guilty and paid fines to settle charges related to the theft of items from a New York State Department of Environmental Conservation facility in Schuyler County earlier this year.
In January, investigators from DEC’s Division of Law Enforcement Bureau of Environmental Crimes Investigation (BECI) Unit responded to a report of ongoing vandalism at the DEC facility.

Fewer hunters are chasing diving ducks each fall; Would tweaking limits bring them back?

Duck hunting has changed in recent years, and so have perceptions about the sport.
Field hunting for ducks has become popular, especially in western Minnesota and the Dakotas. Today, duck hunting for many people means enclosed aluminum trailers, hundreds of full-body decoys, and some spinning-wing decoys, too.

Advances in mapping, mobility, and teamwork help today’s ice anglers cover more (hard) water

Full-blown ice season is coming quickly. As I sit down and write this, I expect to see ice-covered lakes across much of the Midwest in the coming weeks, maybe even days.
Similar to their open-water counterparts, ice anglers are far more effective than they’ve ever been when it comes to finding and catching fish. Generally speaking, we have technology to thank for that. It’s helped us to find lakes, find fish and, ultimately, catch fish more efficiently.

Jeffrey Frischkorn: Where have all Ohio’s steelhead gone?

Blame the COVID-19 pandemic for claiming another victim – Ohio’s steelhead trout program.
Sort of and in the process the outcome has impoverished more than a few steelhead anglers. Myself included. Finding trout to cast a swing fly to on a large river or else channeling one’s energies to securing a pod of spawning trout in a small tributary now requires one becoming a steelhead bloodhound.
