Four counties have been added to the list of those open for the 2026 late-winter deer season, which will be held over two weekends (Jan. 1-4 and Jan. 16-18) in Illinois.
One county that was on the late-winter list last season – Putnam County – will be open for the CWD season instead. As of Dec. 5, DNR had not made a public announcement about the upcoming late-winter and special CWD seasons, but permits for the two seasons were set to go on sale Dec. 10.

Early tally shows buck kill dips 2.6% from 2024 during Wisconsin gun hunt

Early returns from the 2025 nine-day gun-deer season show Wisconsin hunters registered 182,084 total deer during the 2025 gun deer season, a number that is down 0.8% statewide from the 2024 final registration numbers.
That 182,084 includes 86,068 bucks and 96,016 antlerless deer (does and fawns, including buck fawns). Compared to 2024, the buck kill is down 2.6% and the antlerless harvest up 0.9%. Hunters anticipated a little different picture for the buck kill heading into this season for two main reasons.

Folks who support a sandhill crane hunting season in Wisconsin can be encouraged that the Senate Committee on Financial Institutions and Sporting Heritage held a public hearing Nov. 19 on Senate Bill 112 that would create a sandhill crane season.
However, there are many steps ahead that must be completed for the hunting bill to pass and the season to become a reality.
