Hard water has arrived: Don’t miss this golden opportunity to catch walleyes

On many lakes and reservoirs, the early ice time frame provides one of the best periods for catching walleye through the ice. The early ice period in fact continues trends from fall fishing.
For simply connecting the dots and landing on walleyes right away at early ice, one of the best strategies is circling back to the best locations or lakes that were productive a few weeks ago. Breaking down locations even further, some of our favorite early ice locations fall into a handful of characteristics.

Fewer hunters are chasing diving ducks each fall; Would tweaking limits bring them back?

Duck hunting has changed in recent years, and so have perceptions about the sport.
Field hunting for ducks has become popular, especially in western Minnesota and the Dakotas. Today, duck hunting for many people means enclosed aluminum trailers, hundreds of full-body decoys, and some spinning-wing decoys, too.

A subtle approach is necessary during early ice

The period of early ice is a coveted time of year for anglers. Fishing can peak on many small lakes in particular during early ice.
The reason for great fishing simply might be that fish are concentrated over shallow basins or secondary basins, and the first anglers at these locations experience some of the best fishing of the season. These locations simply don’t recharge during winter.

Work basins adjacent to the popular structure to find less-pressured winter walleyes

I have often compared walleyes to white-tailed deer. Both species seem to love edges.
Walleye fishing traditionally also has been all about finding and understanding structure. When we look at fishing structure, however, think of structure as first-come, first-served. What can happen so often is that the first anglers on a specific piece of structure can do particularly well, then the spots seldom last longer than a week for what we would consider good fishing.
