Mike Raykovicz: Thoughts on another New York firearms deer season

Here we are, heading for late November, and the firearms season has just begun throughout most of the state. With thousands of New York hunters searching for deer, it’s important to be reminded of, and share important safety precautions.
Legal shooting time is 1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset but, in my experience, not everyone abides by this rule.

Jeff Frischkorn: Slowing down, but still a waterfowler at heart

At heart, really, I’m a waterfowler. And have been for nigh unto some 59 years.
I don’t own a marsh or belong to an exclusive duck-hunting club. Neither has anyone pole-pushed a boat into a bank of reeds where I could shoot, all to the accompaniment of cheering bravos by guides for my expertise with a fowling shotgun. Alright, I’ll be fully honest here. I’ve been on waterfowl hunting trips where all I had to do was shoot ducks on opening day in an Arkansas flooded forest.

Steve Pollick: First skiff of snow signals bird feeding should begin

The first skiffs of snow painted Froggy Bottom with white highlights on Nov. 10, then Froggy Pond iced over for the first time this season on Nov. 11.
Nature’s clock told me it was time to start my winter bird feeding routine. I dutifully cleaned and hung out my 11 feeders – which I scatter across the back “Forty” to provide a variety of venues.

Here’s the weedy truth about early ice panfish

Like most fish species, panfish – we’re talking bluegills, crappies, and even jumbo perch here – are all usually super active during the early ice period. Those first few weeks of hard water are a simple extension of their fall feeding binge. That means fewer challenges for anglers… if you know where to look.

Fishing with forward-facing sonar offers a different perspective

No letters in bass fishing have caused more controversy than FFS. It stands for forward-facing sonar, but every company that produces these types of units has its own name for it.
While anglers have tried to solve underwater mysteries since the first anchor and rope dropped, this latest technology is a universe removed from the little green boxes that were all the rage 40 years ago. The FFS controversy is so heated that several professional bass fishing circuits have limited its use.
