Tyler Frantz: Bear hunting is prized, precious in Pennsylvania

Sneaking quietly along the ridge in the inky-black stillness of predawn, a fresh coating of snow revealed where bears had clearly overturned leaves while rooting for acorns.
Multiple sets of tracks added confidence that we had chosen the right location for opening morning. We dropped in elevation to the next bench, half sliding on our backsides down the steep, laurel-choked slope.

Minnesota DNR offers clarification regarding food plots, baiting for deer

In response to information circulating on social media related to hunting near food plots, Minnesota DNR Enforcement officials are clarifying what is illegal and legal about hunting near such plots, designed to provide whitetail forage as well as attract other wildlife.
Food plots – areas of grain, corn, soybeans, or clover – offer refuges for deer to graze throughout the year, including during winter. These food plots may be located on public or private lands.

Your bird dog’s performance afield will show you holes in your training game

Most hunting dog owners have a pretty rosy view of their four-legged counterparts. And why shouldn’t they?

Commentary: Two great ways to donate venison in Ohio

Ohio’s venison donation programs give hunters a reason to keep going.
A common phrase I hear or see posted on social media this time of year is, “I’m tagged out for the season!” It’s usually accompanied by a picture of the hunter’s white-tailed deer buck. While I know their statement relates to the punching of their antlered deer tag, many of those hunters haven’t reached their county or statewide bag limit. Part of me wonders if they’re really finished for the season after filling just one tag?

Commentary: With federal government shutdown over, what’s it mean for conservation?

Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever on Nov. 12 applauded the U.S. Congress for reopening the federal government, restoring critical operations for conservation programs across the country.
After 42 days, farmers were set to again receive program payments and conservation technical assistance, furloughed employees nationwide were to return to work, and conservation efforts were to resume on public and private lands.
