Mike Schoonveld: A win-win bill for Michigan anglers

Late last year I wrote a column about a proposal that would allow anglers fishing from boats in the Great Lakes to pay an extra fee that would allow them to fish with more than three rods per person. The exact details weren’t completely ironed out.
One version would allow a solo angler, who had paid for the special privilege, to fish with up to six rods. Those three “extra” rods would have been the limit per boat.

Minnesota’s Voyageurs Wolf Project reports 31% decrease in Greater Voyageurs Ecosystem wolf population

The much-studied wolf population in the Greater Voyageurs Ecosystem (GVE) of northern Minnesota is at its lowest level in roughly the past decade.
The population – estimated at 100 wolves – dropped 19% the past year, according to the 2024-2025 Greater Voyageurs Ecosystem Wolf Population Report. The Voyageurs Wolf Project (VWP) recently released the report. The group’s researchers have been studying wolves in the 218,000-acre GVE (which includes Voyageurs National Park) since 2014.

Lots of critters can entertain treestand-bound deer hunters

A deer hunter’s elevated stand offers a unique portal into nature.
I thought about this last week while perched in an ash tree 17 or so feet above the ground, bow and arrow in hand. It was late afternoon, the air cool and dry, and a light northwest wind commanded just enough muscle to shudder stubborn fall foliage.

Minnesota conservation officer discovers letters from 1894

As Conservation Officers Hanna Wood and Emily Douvier were cruising the backroads of Otter Tail County, Minn., on Wednesday, Oct. 29, Douvier thought she spotted a dead swan in a field.
Naturally, the officers pulled over to check it out. They happened to park in the driveway of a home up for auction.

Jeffrey Frischkorn: Ohio’s Put-In-Bay more than parties and pubs for outdoor users

When you’re done cleaning a limit of Lake Erie walleyes, when you feel stuffed and can’t handle another slice of pizza, and are tired of the Put-in-Bay pub scene, there’s another possibility.
Take a walk on the wild side with a stroll at one of Put-in-Bay Township Park District’s 33 units, most of which are open to the public. A number of them having unimproved trails, too. It is one of those “I didn’t know that” enlightenments to include that not all of the properties have a toehold strictly on South Bass Island.
