The much-studied wolf population in the Greater Voyageurs Ecosystem (GVE) of northern Minnesota is at its lowest level in roughly the past decade.
The population – estimated at 100 wolves – dropped 19% the past year, according to the 2024-2025 Greater Voyageurs Ecosystem Wolf Population Report. The Voyageurs Wolf Project (VWP) recently released the report. The group’s researchers have been studying wolves in the 218,000-acre GVE (which includes Voyageurs National Park) since 2014.
