Minnesota’s James Hautman wins 2025 Federal Duck Stamp Art Contest for a record seventh time

After two days of competition, James Hautman, an artist from Chaska, Minn., won the 2025 Federal Duck Stamp Art Contest with his acrylic painting of three buffleheads. The announcement was made at an in-person event and via livestream at Patuxent Research Refuge in Laurel, Maryland.
Hautman’s artwork will be made into the 2026-2027 Federal Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp, more commonly know as the Duck Stamp, which will go on sale in late June 2026.

Mike Raykovicz: Take advantage of New York’s revamped Angler Achievement Awards Program

The late Tom Yacovella, of Utica, N.Y., was a member of the New York State Outdoorsman Hall of Fame and a good friend of mine. When he and his wife, JoAnn, lived here in the Southern Tier, Yacovella and I often hunted turkeys together in both Pennsylvania and New York until he and his family moved to Utica.
Tom talked about taking a record brook trout. He eventually achieved this in 2009 when he successfully caught and landed a 5-pound, 4.5-ounce brook trout from Raquette Lake, in Hamilton County.

Wisconsin DNR increases monitoring and response efforts for invasive round goby in Winnebago System

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources announced that additional monitoring and response efforts will be taken to address increased reports of invasive round gobies in the Winnebago System.
After an angler reported a sighting of round goby in June, the DNR has confirmed the presence of round goby in Lake Winnebago near the Bowen Street Fishing Pier. Round gobies can displace native fish populations and have the potential to impact Lake Winnebago’s sport fish and panfish species through competition for prey and by eating their eggs.

Pennsylvania Game Commission tracking EHD spread across state

The true impact of the current outbreak of epizootic hemorrhagic disease, or EHD, in deer throughout Pennsylvania won’t be known until the first frost arrives this fall, but it’s possible several regions are affected.
According to Travis Lau, communications director for the Pennsylvania Game Commission, mortality resulting from EHD is likely in the hundreds, but obtaining an actual figure is tricky, he said. So far, the disease has been confirmed in several counties in the northwestern part of the state.

All mentored hunters under age 7 may get tags

All mentored hunters – including those under 7 years old – would get big-game harvest tags with their permits if a proposal before the Pennsylvania Board of Game Commissioners is given final approval.
The board voted at its recent quarterly meeting to preliminarily approve the measure, which is meant to improve access to the mentored hunting program and expand hunting opportunities within it.
