Ron Schara: It’s fall game survey season, and the numbers will be crunched

It’s game survey season, in case you haven’t noticed – a time for raising expectations. Or lowering them.
Recently, outdoors headlines have been filled with surveys about pheasant counts, duck numbers, grouse counts … even cottontail and jackrabbits seen along survey routes. Oh gosh, the numbers, the percentages, the used-to-be figures; they’re sometimes baffling. To me, at least.

Christine Thomas: Conservation women fish coastal Maine

“We are going to do a combination of ground fishing and shark fishing,” I told anyone who would listen, as the summer field trip for the Duck’s Unlimited (DU) Conservation Programs Committee (CPC) approached.
As I wrote in my last column, we were headed to Maine for a two-day meeting. Dr. Karen Waldrop, DU’s chief conservation officer, Jessica Tyler, DU’s manager of conservation projects, and I decided to stay another day after the meeting to go fishing.

Ryan Rothstein: Bowhunting, and the art of sitting still

In fairness, the headline of this column is a bit of a misnomer.
After all, in theory, sitting still should require you to do nothing at all. But I also mean it in the broader sense – as in, don’t get up and walk around when you’re supposed to be deer hunting. You placed your stand or blind in a certain spot for a reason, so stay put. It’s different in practice, though.

‘Tri-State Bear’ collared in Ohio killed by a vehicle in New York

A young black bear collared by biologists from the Ohio DNR’s Division of Wildlife in the spring of 2024 met a sad end on a back road in western New York in August.
The 2- to 4-year-old bear was found road-killed on Aug. 18 in Chautauqua County. Its electronic collar was returned to Ohio for further evaluation, according to wildlife biologist Katie Dennison. Nicknamed the “Tri-State Bear,” the young bruin’s collar revealed a pattern of wandering.

Steve Sarley: Butkus? Rodman? My toughest athlete is an angler

There have been a lot of tough guys who have played for our Chicago sports teams. Who is the toughest athlete that you can think of, past or present?
In football, I offer the name of Dick Butkus, legendary Bears linebacker. Sports has a lot of tough guys. My No. 1 sports tough guy is a fisherman.

Glenn Sapir: My two favorite hunting shows

In May of 2024, my turkey hunting season was winding down. I was on a fishing outing on the Pepacton Reservoir, in Delaware County, N.Y., with my good friend Bob Shubert.
After our first afternoon of smallmouth fishing, we went back to Bob’s sportsman’s house in Downsville to relax. His “second home” lacks for nothing, including a big-screen television. When Bob turned it on and switched to one of his favorite programs, a new season of hunting for me immediately began.

What can pheasant hunters expect from the 2025 season? Here’s the forecast from the Midwest

For many upland bird hunters, ring-necked pheasants are their gold standard. Most years, there’s significant variations in the Upper Midwest states that hold a population of these charismatic birds, but this year there seems to be optimism in all the primary pheasant-producing states.
As always, the components of top-notch habitat and good spring weather to pull off strong nesting efforts and high percentage chick survival is the determining factor in each fall’s hunting success. Here’s a breakdown of what hunters can expect this fall in pheasant-producing states.
