The Ohio DNR (ODNR) Division of Wildlife proposed reducing the white-tailed deer bag limit in Athens, Meigs, and Washington counties from three deer to two in response to an unprecedented outbreak of Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD) in these locations.
If approved by the Ohio Wildlife Council, the proposed bag limit reduction would take effect on Monday, Dec. 1, 2025, coinciding with opening day of the seven-day deer gun season.

Dust plumes rose frequently along a gravel section of Elk Vale Road on the open prairie of Meade County, South Dakota in early September where workers are vigorously trying to finish a gun range that will be among the nation’s largest.
Plumbers, landscapers, equipment operators and construction crews were all busy working or driving to or from the 400-acre site.
Epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) continues to rapidly spread across southeast Ohio, making its presence known in 24 counties as of mid-September.
“And we have several more samples at the lab now that will likely be confirmed (EHD) in the next couple of days,” Clint McCoy, the ODNR Division of Wildlife’s deer biologist, told Ohio Outdoor News on Sept. 10.
EHD is a viral disease that is often fatal to whitetailed deer. The disease, which is often associated with hot and dry weather, typically subsides at the first frost, which kills the midges that carry the disease.

It was the week after Thanksgiving in 2019. My cousin Kurt Bahti and I had packed into a remote basin in the Santa Rita mountains south of Tucson to hunt Coues deer.
A 2-inch deluge on Thanksgiving Day had turned the trail sloppy and the intermittent streams into torrents, but we got into the bench above the creek that afternoon and set up camp as the weather changed and some snow began to fall.

Following suit with other large lakes throughout Minnesota, the Grand Rapids and International Falls DNR fisheries offices are kicking off fisheries input groups for the large lakes in their regions.
Lake Winnibigoshish, Rainy Lake, and Lake Kabetogama will be the focus of new citizen input groups the DNR is forming to draft new management plans and continue to garner community input beyond drafting those plans.

With the new hunting season upon us, it brings hopes of perfect hunting days that close with memories made to last a lifetime. Some of those memories will be nothing more than a laugh with a group of friends, yet others will encompass celebratory handshakes from friends and family.
So what can you do to increase your odds of making one of those latter memories this fall? Although trail-cams have been around for a few decades, many people still don’t create a good plan for using them every year.

I’m extremely fortunate to live on a piece of property that has been in my family for generations, as far back as the late 19th century. Like my father, I grew up here and in my younger days my uncle owned what was once the family farm that long ago was homesteaded by my great grandparents.
As boys, my two brothers and I wandered the woods, often with BB guns. As we grew into hunters, the woods on the family property produced its share of grouse and gray squirrels. As an adult, I’ve successfully hunted both deer and turkeys here.
