An archery elk hunt that was worth the wait

Running into the depths of a box canyon, I figured I could cut off the screaming bull in a saddle between two ridges on the opposite side of it.
Nearing the top, I heard him cut loose again. As I crested the hill, I knew I had only minutes left to cover the ground before he would pass through the saddle and disappear into the heavy timber, where he would lie the rest of the day.

Relatively new to competitive target archery, New York’s Melissa Lanfair has big 2025 season

As the depth of winter settled in, and the short days became consumed by darkness in 2023, Melissa Lanfair, of Warrensburg, in Warren County, N.Y., who had been a lifelong hunter, decided to try her hand at target archery after being introduced to it at Hudson Falls Fish and Game Club in adjacent Washington County.
Within months, she found herself engrossed in everything archery and began picking the brains of amateurs and professionals alike, never willing to settle for anything less than her personal best.

Thanksgiving comes with memories of special hunts before dinner

Peering out the picture window and waiting with keen interest to see the line of cars and trucks I knew would be pulling into the driveway, I silently hoped my father would be the one who would have a buck in tow.
The smell of a freshly baked apple pie mixed nicely with the aroma coming from the banana bread that was finishing its journey in the oven before it would be packed into the car and brought to my grandparents’ house for the annual Thanksgiving feast, where my aunts, uncles, cousins and other distant relatives would share thanks and catch up on yearly happenings.

How to put together trail-cam data that will help you in the big woods

With the new hunting season upon us, it brings hopes of perfect hunting days that close with memories made to last a lifetime. Some of those memories will be nothing more than a laugh with a group of friends, yet others will encompass celebratory handshakes from friends and family.
So what can you do to increase your odds of making one of those latter memories this fall? Although trail-cams have been around for a few decades, many people still don’t create a good plan for using them every year.

Late-season bow hunting means having a plan to withstand tough conditions

As the end of New York’s regular (rifle) deer seasons comes to a close, plenty of opportunities await for some late-season bowhunting. However, planning can bring an array of things to consider, especially knowing that temperatures could plummet into the single digits, and there might be more days with snow than without.
All things considered, let’s break it down and examine what should be on the top of the list to ensure the best chance to succeed.

New York 3D archer wins three major events

A Capital-region archer captured three major 3D archery titles in 2024. But the road to victory didn’t come easy.
In February, the national 3D tour began in Foley, Ala., and professional archer Jacob Slusarz, from Voorheesville, N.Y., headed south to build upon his resume. However, when the weekend ended, he found himself in 25th place and realized things had to change.

Opportunity to mentor young hunter ends with a giant mountain buck in New York’s Adirondacks

The ice crackled like the noise of a small pebble being thrown through a glass window, and my breath floated into the frigid air as I looked over my scope. The deer would be in sight in seconds, and I waited for an opportunity young hunters dream about.
Suddenly, he appeared in an opening and paused to check his surroundings. Easing the safety forward, the pressure against my index finger increased ever so slightly before the silence of the cold, calm November morning was shattered.

Trick or Treat: Halloween can be a magical time of year in the whitetail woods

It was four days before Halloween, and I still hadn’t located anything that alerted me to the presence of bucks beginning to show themselves with any regularity. I would use the day to cover as much ground as possible to see if I could locate any annual scrapes that had been opened, as I knew that would be the secret to filling my tag on one of the magical days around Halloween.
After parking my truck, I headed toward the back of the mountain to check an oak flat where a finger that was inundated with saplings tapered off into a beaver meadow. Filling a tag on or around Halloween can be made much easier if you concentrate on the three things I planned on searching for throughout the day.
