Draft plan could tighten striped bass regulations

On Aug. 6, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s Atlantic Striped Bass Management Board met to finalize the latest draft of Addendum III to Amendment 7 to the Interstate Fishery Management Plan for Atlantic Striped Bass, which is intended to rebuild the currently over-fished striped bass spawning stock by the close of 2029, as required by the ASMFC’s management plan.
The draft will soon be released for public comment.

Bill Hilts, Jr.: New handicapped access lift unveiled at Dunkirk, N.Y.

We all know what an absolute blessing New York shares in its Great Lakes resources. Lake Erie, Lake Ontario, and the Niagara River is the angling trilogy that is second to none in the world of freshwater fishing in the western part of the state.
Unfortunately, not everyone has access to these waters due to personal limitations. It needed to change.

Gear items that will add to your efficiency this bowhunting season

One thing that helps get me through the heart of a bowhunting offseason is analyzing gear for my mobile hunting style.
This mobile approach has helped me shoot a lot more deer, but it can become a mental grind during certain times. It helps to have an efficient system dialed in to effectively hunt this way during what can be 95 degrees and mosquitoes during the early season and 20-below zero temperatures in December.

Commentary: What to do about declining North American duck populations

We, the Old Duck Managers Group, are retired Minnesota DNR and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologists who worked on waterfowl management, research, and/or law enforcement our entire careers. We have watched as ducks have disappeared from habitats we see in our day-to-day lives – areas where we worked, and from our decoys during the past 30 years.
In this commentary, we share our perspectives and opinions about declining duck numbers gleaned from our 200 years of combined experience.

Invasive rusty crayfish trapping offers lake benefits, and a tasty meal

It was just another day at work for Tim Fischer and his son, Vince, as they took to the waters of Minnesota’s Lake Vermilion to check crayfish traps they’d set the previous day.
Tim Fischer has been catching invasive crayfish for about 20 years on Vermilion, and has expanded his business, Northern Foragers, over the years to encompass foraging for various mushrooms, berries, and such on his acres of land in northern Minnesota. His foraging and commercial crayfish operation, which involves his wife and son, is a major departure from his early career as a chef.

Minnesota Land Trust easement work reaches Lake Vermilion’s shores

In recent years, Minnesota Land Trust has been working with private landowners, camps, and environmental learning centers to get their land designated as conservation easements to protect the land indefinitely.
“Private landowners are critical for Minnesota’s natural resources. Over 70% of Minnesota is privately owned, and these lands face the greatest risk of being divided and developed,” said Sarah Sullivan, communications and marketing manager for Minnesota Land Trust.
The trust has worked with private landowners throughout the state to protect about 100,000 acres of land that will remain protected in future years.

Scarecrows helping crop production inside Michigan’s Shiawassee State Game Area

Eric Ray, 50, loves the Shiawassee River State Game Area in Michigan. It’s been that way since his dad took him duck hunting there when he was a young teen.
“It was the first place we hunted ducks,” Ray told Michigan Outdoor News. “We hunted in what’s Zone 12 now – back in that day it was Zone 5 – we paddled a canoe in there, set out some decoys. The first duck I shot was a black duck and since then I’ve been completely obsessed.”
