Tom Venesky: CWD is no reason to stop hunting

When chronic wasting disease turned up for the first time in northeastern Pennsylvania last year, there were concerns from local hunters that the presence of the disease could eventually mean the end of deer hunting in the area.
Granted this was the first time hunters living in the northeast had to deal with the risk of CWD being in the places they hunt, but the concern was valid. If it’s possible that diseased deer are wandering around in the woods, they reasoned, would hunters still be willing to hunt in those places?

Ryan Rothstein: Last-gasp food plots that could save your deer season

If you’ve been around the food-plotting world for a while, you know the past several years have provided more than their fair share of challenges to successful food plot establishment in Minnesota.
Whether it’s been severe drought or torrential rain, it’s been a roller coaster trying to provide whitetail nutrition and hunting opportunities. True to form, 2025 has been no exception, with heavy rains across much of Minnesota. But the good news is that it’s not too late to get some forage on the ground and salvage your growing season.

Cleaning smallish yellow perch is a snap

Instead of throwing smaller yellow perch back on the days when schools cannot be located or convinced to bite, I routinely take home fish that are not in the ideal 8- to 10-inch range that I prefer.
I have cleaned thousands of perch under 8 inches and have settled on 7 inches as the smallest size that produces a worthwhile fillet. For those with less practice filleting, one option for processing small perch is to simply “hog dress” them.

Bob Gwizdz: Michigan hunting, fishing license fee proposal not as dramatic as last one; will it pass?

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources’ quest for a license fee increase is more than a year old now and is still nowhere near a fait accompli.
The provisions of the new fee structure have changed dramatically from the version introduced last legislative session, with generally smaller fee increases and a significantly less dramatic cut to the senior discount with a tie-barred companion bill that would require the Legislature reimburse the Game and Fish Protection Fund from the General Fund for those discounts.

Waterfowl pre-season prep: The time is now to get organized

From my perspective, summer had been passing agonizing slowly. The seemingly unending hot, humid streak made autumn appear far way, so I put hunt plans on the shelf.
Until now. I was nearly in shock as I recently realized that bird-hunting seasons are right around the corner. Suddenly, there are myriad tasks to accomplish, such as finishing my Hydro-Turf boat floor installation, organizing decoys and, importantly, scouting for hunting locations and brushing up on low-light duck identification.
