Boats, gear must meet Canadian aquatic invasive species requirements before entering Canada

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is reminding boaters and anglers that Canada requires watercraft and equipment to meet Canadian aquatic invasive species regulations before crossing into Canada.

Canada Border Services Agency’s Memorandum D19-8-5 says travelers towing or transporting boats, trailers and water-related equipment at any border crossing must ensure that these items are free of AIS; cleaned of aquatic plants, animals, mud and debris; drained of water; and dry before entering Canada. In a recent column for Outdoor News, Minnesota editor Tim Spielman detailed how more anglers are being turned back at border crossings as Canada ‘digs in its heels’ in regards to AIS prevention.

Huge Schuylkill River flathead will not be a Pennsylvania record, at least not officially

It might have been one for the Pennsylvania books – the record books – if only Dan Brown had been able to locate a certified scale for his mammoth flathead catfish.
The South Philadelphia angler landed what he claims was a 72.5-pound, 50-inch behemoth on the Schuylkill River June 1 while fishing his usual weekend spot, but he couldn’t find a place to get it officially weighed, so he released it back into the water.

Minnesota commission says no to expedited CWD outreach project in the southeast

On Wednesday, June 11, three projects were presented to the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Natural Resources, all seeking immediate funding from a pool of Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund dollars for “emerging issues.”

Emerging issues involve the types of projects that qualify for ENRTF dollars but have some type of imminent need for funding sooner than the annual process that takes about a year. One such project, presented by the University of Minnesota’s Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy, was related to chronic wasting disease in the southeastern part of the state – specifically newly endemic DPAs 646, 647, and 648.

For nearly two decades, Bill Pike, of Hartford, in Washington County, N.Y., has overseen an annual women’s-only shooting sports program that sees 35-40 women participate each year and learn about firearms and archery.
Now, at age 85, the 2023 New York Outdoor News Person of the Year is ready to pass the torch.
“I’m justing going to step back a little bit,” Pike said. “As long as I’m able, I will help out. I’m 85-years-old and it’s time to slow down a little bit.”

How do you catch a limit of Minnesota’s wild brook trout? Search in wild places

There are brook trout scattered throughout Minnesota, and much of the Upper Midwest. While you might assume that they’re prevalent in areas most known for trout fishing in general, that’s not always the case.
Native brookies are out there, finning away in cold, clean water. To find them, you’ll have to do a little sleuthing.

Chasing New York’s smallmouth bass record? Your odds might be better than ever

The odds of catching a state record smallmouth bass across the Northeast and Midwest have greatly improved the past couple of decades. These state records have been broken numerous times in recent years. There’s a handful of reasons for this possibility.
One is the fact that years ago, the round goby baitfish entered our Great Lakes waterways. The gobies that are loaded with protein help the normal-sized smallies put on an extra pound or more during their lifetime. The second reason for the increased number of records is probably technology.
